Reading material to help prepare for the CFI-A & MEI addon.

Hey all, i am wondering what are some good reading materials out there to prepare for the CFI-A and MEI addon. I already have my initial done (CFI-I) so i guess i can disregard all the FOI info.

Right now i am reading the Airplane Flying Handbook, the CFI-A Oral exam book by ASA as well as the Pilot's handbook of aeronautical knowledege.

For the MEI, which i assume will be easier, i am going over the Jeppesen Multi-Engine text. I find it to be an excellent book as i've used it for my CMEL and i was over prepared for that ride.

If you have anything esle to add please do so. I do not plan to start training until next spring (currently getting my funds together) but i plan to start reading from now so that i can minimize ground time and hopefully it won't take too long to get these done. I already took and passed the CFI-A written already so that's one less thing to worry about.

Thanks.

The two most important books for these two ratings.

The PTS! They even list relative references.

Search faa.gov for 'Flying light twins safely'

Gliem has some pretty good maneuver books as well for the CFI-A.

I think you're setting yourself up for failure by saying, "i guess i can disregard all the FOI info." Both my add-on check rides had questions on FOI. I wouldn't spend a lot of time on it, but it's probably a good idea to skim the Aviation Instructor's handbook again.

FWIW, in the beginning I thought that book was worthless. After a few years in the right seat I see that it's more important than any other subject area on the exam. If you don't know how people learn, you'll never be able to teach them.

Honestly, i found the FOI portion to be mostly common sense when i was studying for my oral. On my initial, the inspector probably spent at most 20-25 mins with me on this because he can sense that i knew the fundamentals of instructing. They are not stupid people..., they would often skim through your strong points and dig deeper when they smell fear.

/off topic/

What is "Aviation Technology"? Is it wrenching or being able to coherently discuss, say friction stir welding Vs rivets, alum Vs composites?

/back to you in the studio/

Sounds like you have everything you need, including the PTS. I read the same books you listed and did just fine, and that was with a very "strict" examiner.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks.
I do not intend to make a career out of being a CFI, cause frankly i won't be able to survive. I do plan to teach close friends and maybe my kids, some 20+ years from now!
