Cockpit argument: Pilot slaps co-pilot
By: Kashif Khusro

An Air-India pilot allegedly slapped his co-pilot in the cockpit, while the
aircraft was taxiing on the Dubai runway recently. The pilot allegedly was
upset with the co-pilot over an argument, and lost his temper.

Thereafter the co-pilot stalked off, refusing to fly. Perforce, AI had to get
in another co-pilot on layover. The incident happened on the flight AI 855 from
Mumbai to Dubai.

"First officer S D'costa had some argument with the commander Captain B
Cowasjee over take-off and in a fit of rage Cowasjee slapped the co-pilot,"
said an AI operations official. Following the incident, the flight was delayed
for more than three hours, till another first officer could arrive as D'costa
had left.

"The aircraft is certified for two pilots and they have to cooperate with each
other, while flying. If the co-pilot offers a suggestion, the commander has
every right to reject it, but he cannot hit his first officer," he said.

Another senior pilot said pilots are trained in Cockpit Resource
Management (CRM), that deals with such situations.

"There are times when the situation is tense between pilots, but coming to
blows is a new phenomenon, especially in India," he said.

Both the pilots and the airline spokesperson were unavailable for comment.

What is CRM?

Cockpit Resource Management training (CRM) is the effective utilisation of all
available resources, information, equipment and the human ability to achieve a
safe and efficient flight.

This also means that while the captain is the supreme authority on an aircraft,
his decision can also be countermanded. But in practice this is never the case,
as the first officer has to abide by the captain in all situations.

CRM has contributed towards prevention of 'pilot error' accidents and has saved
airplanes and lives.

I wonder what the FO would do if this happened in mid-flight.

If I were the copilot I woulda beat his a** into first class! ...and I'd also be unemployed shortly thereafter

I know a guy who got into an actual fight with his captain at a regional.

...on the ramp...

...in semi-clear view of the terminal...

Needless to say, considering my prior knowledge of his personality, I wasn't suprised when I heard the story!

Of course he was fired.

I'm not sure.

This guy was always turned up to "11" and had the "Napoleonic Complex" big time.

A bitchslap is nothin'! An F/O at my domicile was sent for 'specialty traiing' and given some time off after getting into some sort of confrontation with the Capt and then bonking him on the head with the flashlight.

Recently on a Middle East carrier, the FO and Captain got into a fight. The FO stormed off the aircraft - the captain proceded with the flight, flying the plane (full of passengers) on his own. He got ordered down before reaching his destination.

Seems odd to me - they were building pyramids while we were still living in caves, beating our chest - yet today they can not understand CRM.

Ahhh, there we go!

I plumbed on the 727 when some of the 'Nam guys were stuck in the right seat for too long. Twice I had an FO offer to step out on the ramp with the captain and settle a dispute. It was effective CRM. Both times the captain became easier to work with, for that trip anyway.

Dang, I didn't know they allowed you to show your pimp hand in the workplace. I'm moving to India and walkin into my job just wishin'...........

My favorite was the Mesa 1900 capt who saw his ex-girlfriend flying with her new boyfriend (she was FO he was CA) in BOS. He went up to make a smart remark to her (on the ramp) and she slapped him. Hard. Well he slapped her back. Next thing you know the new BF jumps in and it was a melee!

I don't remember who got fired out of that one ...

There was a guy at Skyway who was dating a CHQ captain's girlfriend who was a Skyway FO.

Needless to say, on the unofficial crew-to-crew midwest "ducks" frequency (122.22), this guy would always ask if "XXX was onboard one of the Skyway aircraft.
