Re-introducing the turboprop

Do you guys think that the turboprop will ever make a come back and be a primary means for travel? I read an article regarding TPs stating that one airline switched from TPs to RJs and saw a 25% increase in traffic within a few months (I will look for the article).

My understanding is people feel generally safer on RJs since they fly higher, faster, and are much more quiet.

Still, ROCK ON TPs!:rawk:

A primary means for freight to travel maybe. Almost every former regional turboprop type is now flying freight.

ATR's, Brasilias, Bandits, Metros, B-1900's, Fokker F-27's, Shorts, even a couple of Saabs, and probably more that I'm forgetting.

I don't think you'll see a big comeback in the pax world, except in places where turboprops can operate and jets can't and those are already there.

Horizon thinks otherwise and has ditched orders for CR7s to order that new Dash8Q400 gizmo. I would love to fly a new Q400... They just look cool. I kinda hope they (regionals) do go back to turbo props though, maybe they will save money by flying those as opposed to saving money by paying pilots dirt wages.

Do you really believe companies will give back any profits to pilots? And do you really believe that pilots will be paid more to fly turboprops then jets?

No, and yes!

Horizon first year FO on Dash8 = $29/hr
Mesa first year FO on CRJ = $21/hr

And I am not saying they are going to increase pay to switch from a jet to a prop, but a good company might use consider this as one of the many benifits to switch to a prop. Obviously they save more on fuel which is the big thing, but another bonus is you have happy employees. It is obvious that happy employees mean nothing at some airlines and at others it means at least a little something.

Keep going with that

Mesa first year on the Dash8 - $19

I don't think pilots are going to get paid more to fly props. The lone exception that I can think of is Eagle Captains on the ATR make more then Captains on the ERJ (at least as first year pay, which is non exsistant anyways as people keep their logevity when they upgrade).

Even at Eagle, the ATR 72, a 70 seat prop only pays slightly better than the 37 and 44 seat EMB-135 and EMB-140. The 50 seat EMB-145 does have better payscales than the ATR 72. The FO scales are always better on the jet.

oh puhlease...

comparing horizon to mesa is like comparing apples to cockroaches.

Okay, then I challenge you to name a regional (other than Horizon) that pays more than $24 for a jet (or t-prop) for first year FO. :)

Horizon's hourly rates are good but reserve guarantee is only 69 hours and if I'm not mistaken they don't get block or better. Their work rules could be better. Keep in mind all of their jets and many of their props are 70 seaters as well.

island pays $26

Okay, I'll concede to that. :) However, QX still pays more for the same plane, and the real point of my previous statement was that it's not just Mesa that pays crap for the first year, it's nearly all regionals.
