? re: charts, pilots for 121

Capt.
I must confess ignorance ... what are the LIDO Charts.

Among other things, Lufthansa provides Airways manuals along the same lines with Jeppesen and NOS.

If you're interested, you can visit their website:

Lufthansa Systems Airline Operations Systems

Among their "Flight Navigation Services" are the LIDO FMS Navigation Database Sevice, the LIDO Route Manual (the service discussed in this thread), and LIDO eRoute Manual (an EFB, or Electronic Flight Bag, allowing for a "paperless" cockpit).

While FedEx is transitioning to the eRoute Manual (and the FMS Navigation Database Service for the Airbus and MD airplanes), we're using the LIDO Route Manual. It's different, and it's taking some getting used to.

I see pilots lugging their stuff around, and usually there's a large chart case involved. Here's the dumb question:

1) Why doesn't the airline just store a set of charts on every aircraft so that the pilots don't have to lug them around?

2) Why don't the airlines provide electronic chartbooks along the lines of that super-thin black-and-white chart viewer I saw advertised in the magazine but have absolutely no idea what they cost or how they work? :)(It didn't look like a laptop - more like a dedicated device.)

Just curious.

Airlines have tried that before, it becomes one hell of a hassle as you would have to make sure that everytime the airplane lands somebody would have to make sure that each Jepps manual, has all of the pages.

We tried this at Polar many moons ago, I think we lasted about 6 months, pages were contantly missing as pilots would pull a map & not return the page.

My flight case usually weighs in over 50 pounds. Lugging that gets OLD.

There has been talk at MAG about going to a set of Jepps in each aircraft. A system was devised to keep them updated and current. However, that idea was passed over because our top level of management really wants us to go 100% electronic. Rumor has it that we'll see it in a year or so. I'll believe it when it happens.
