Ratings During Summer - Question

Hi Folks,

Well The time has come to start applying to colleges. I am contemplating going to school in D.C. for History/Education since I like the schools down there and love DC. The problem is, I don't see how I could do my flight training from Sep.-May when I'm down there in school. Is it possible to knock out ratings during the summer or would it hurt me in the long run by not flying year round?

Mike

DC has a great night life.
When you are old enough to head to the local "taverns," mention something political, however do not align with one party or another. You'll alienate yourself to early in the game.

Another big plus is the local coffee shops, however use Starbucks as a last resort. To "global" and there are a ton of "hipsters" that need loving. You'll find a quality woman at Starbucks, but keep in mind, she is a woman, not a womyn. You'll learn the difference soon enough...

Fly when you can. Banging out ratings between semesters isn't going to hurt you. Believe it or not, you aren't Chuck Yeager, and you really won't start getting those much needed skills until much later on in your flying life. Enjoy school while you can. Chase tail, not rudders...

You can definitely knock out a rating over the summer, and you may be able to do it in a shorter amount of time since you can put more focus to that. By the looks of it your going to be working toward your private. After you get that you could fly here and there while your in school so that you can keep your proficiency until the summer time and you can knock out another rating.

So if I have my PPL, fly in August, then again in October, December, March and then a lot in summers I don't have to worry about not being current?

Depends?

Are you planning on taking the girl you met at the coffee shop up for a spin around the Potomic? Then worry about staying current. I can't remember is it 3 takeoff and landings in 90 days?

If on the other hand, you are spending your hard earned money on the next rating (instrument?) don't worry about currency. Each flight you do with you II will count towards it, and thus killing 2 birds with stone.

Good luck.

It would be working on IR, Comm. etc not taking people flying because I haven't seen an FBO in the DC area that I can get to without driving since I won't have a car.

If your going to be doing mostly dual instruction then don't worry about currency, and technically your only 'not current' between December and March to take passengers.

Getting ratings during the Summer is not going to hurt you. I would actually make a point to stay current and make some trips during school, but only after beer and girls...I mean studying.

Hey Mike,

Getting a rating between semesters during summer is a great way to do it as long as you can stay focused. I got my private license between college semesters during the summer of 2004, then instrument in 2005, and commercial 2006.

The great thing about knocking out a rating during your 3 month break is that you have to fly almost everyday just to get it done. Flying everyday will help you learn quicker which will keep the cost down in the long run. BUT its all up to you to stay focused. I would recommend finding a 141 school where you can schedule the whole thing before you even begin.

If you have the dedication and self-control, by all means go for it. I most certainly party rocked the last year and a half in college. It never affected my grades but let's just say I started working on my PPL 2 years ago....and am now almost finished with it. Would I go back and do things differently? No way. :rawk:However, now I only have 1 year left of college and it's all online. So I moved back in with the family and started to really focus and 'grow up'.:(

You don't want to look back when you're older and say "Man, I really didn't get to enjoy the college experience" but there comes a time when you just got to let it go and move on with your life.
