Ratings at Purdue

Hey all. I'm a currently a junior in High School thinking about attending Purdue. If I was to major in Aviation Management combined with Flight, would it be possible to get my ratings up through MEI? I would roll into it with my Private and some AP Credits. Is this possible? Also, does Purdue make you take some sort of proficiency course if you already have your private?

Hey there.

Lots of students here who major in Flight get a minor in aviation management. Personally, to double major in flight and aviation management is probably not worth it. If you were to double major, I would double major in Management (through Krannert School of Management).

As for your ratings. Purdue will get you through your Single and Commercial Multi. You can also take a CFI class through Purdue. As for CFII and MEI, you're on your own. However, most students do that at the FBO.

It's possible to get your CFI by the end of the summer after your freshman year.

If you come in with your private, you take a written test consisting of 50 questions (I think) right off the FAA Private Pilot Written. 70% is a pass. If (or should I say, when) you pass, you take the 2nd flight course (commercial) the fall of your freshman year.

Good luck! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Sweet deal. Thanks a ton for the info! I'll be sure to send you a PM if I have any other questions.

Not to nit-pick, Evan, but that test is actually only to test out of AT144 (PPL ground). If you come in with your PPL, you're automatically in AT243, which is Commercial Flight I. If you don't test-out, you have to take AT144, but you're still in AT243.

I've got a question along the same lines. If you were to get your Private and Instrument Part 61, would you have to test out of both before Comm I, or just the Private? And if you got both of them 141, any different? Thanks!

Just the private. Depending on the number of hours you have, you MAY be able to place out of 1 of the 2 commercial flight courses, but that requires some talking.

My advice: wait until college to get your instrument. If you go to Purdue, you will have to re-learn specific procedures and callouts that transfer all the way up to the simulators. Now, I had 20 actual, and took some "un-official" instrument training before I came to Purdue. It really helped, but I saved the procedural things and the actual rating until I got to Purdue.

Good luck!

Cheers.
