Buying into the Alton Brown "hype" with a deep fat fryer.

well, i just finished 221 this fall, and i went back to austin to visit friends for break.

my first "real passenger" was my best friend.

we went go check out a plane in austin and yeah, the first 23.6 seconds i didn't know what to expect from the whole FBO deal.

somewhere around the 25th second all the training kicked in and it felt right at home and i was 100% confident in my private training being fantastic.

hell, it was my first time flying in class C (really, no big deal. but not UND bubble!) and I felt perfectly comfortable, using what i had learned at school, and honestly, it was very enjoyable flying!

i did get some funny looks doing the super-extensive UND preflight that has been burned into my head though!!

oh yeah.... and checklists are optional. :-)

hell, we had to do the charcoal-grill-in-the-garage last night because its just too damn cold to stand outside and grill meat for dinner.

All kidding aside, I am glad you had fun, but checklists and good preflights are not "UNDisms" they are part of being a pilot and not something to throw by the wayside because you are out of the "bubble".

Did you make it over to the Hondo area?

221 is a lot more laid back than 102, no rushing to get the Private. It is a lot of XC time. There are only 27 lessons and two blocks. The 2nd block, 21-27, is all in the sim. The Gorund School seems like a joke right now. Just review of 102 stuff, and only 5 block exams there. You definitely won't have any problems finishing 221 in the summer.

I've never had an Alton Brown recipe work, EVER.

His meatloaf sucked, the pot roast was laughable and the beer battered fish was terrible.

Entertaining show though!

no no, make no mistake, i know that preflights and procedures are part of flying safe and responsibly. and i comfortably just continued to do what i have been trained as good-practice by checking out the unfamiliar aircraft before trusting my life and my passenger's life to it.

and for the checklist usage, the strict adherence to UND checklist usage pretty much has all the general procedures burned solidly into my head...so for a 172 vs a PA28, things worked just fine.

more of like at the FBO the responsibility for safe operation was all put on YOU (me) the pilot.... the FBO didnt act like they were there to babysit me, but yes i still fully realize that safe operation is key and flying can still be enjoyable without being quite so up-tight sometimes :-)
 
I tried his recipe for BBQ ribs in the oven. The rub, the "resting" all that jazz. The damn things didn't cook completely and I was the sickest (not cool mind you) white boy in NC for about a wee, nothing solid came out of my body during that time.

But he does put on a great show. The hamburger rolled out on a cookie sheet to make "Wendy's" style patties works well, makes seasoning more even and the patties aren't so thick.

Or you could just non-rev to KC to pick up some REAL barbeque ribs. Gate's, Jack Stack, Oklahoma Joe's, so many to choose from!
