Yeah if your time is worth anything to you then removing anything other than a small isolated scratch with micro-mesh is not cost effective compared to a new window. Most GA planes you can get even new windshields for around $300.Lemon Pledge and microfiber clothes on plastic windscreens for normal cleaning.
They do sell plastic restoration kits which are really just progressively finer sand paper and buffing agents, if you need to remove scratching. Labor intensive, but can help. Did one many many years ago, and while it certainly wasn't like new when done, it was better.
I think steel wool would turn a plastic wind screen opaque in about .5 seconds.

No way. He just made $X having to replace the window!The loss of a hydrophobic coating due to cleaning with steel wool would likely cause your friendly mechanic to become not so friendly rather quickly.
