Rainex and steel wool on windshield.

Anyone use rainex, or steel wool on aircraft windscreens?

I use steel wool on my trucks glass, and it works magic. Of course rainex is great too.

Anyone gone beyond the normal pledge treatment?

Steel wool?

Rainex works good but doesn't last real long.

Remember aircraft glass isn't glass (unless you're talking LH windshield on a Navajo), it's plexi.

Lemon Pledge and microfiber clothes on plastic windscreens for normal cleaning.

They do sell plastic restoration kits which are really just progressively finer sand paper and buffing agents, if you need to remove scratching. Labor intensive, but can help. Did one many many years ago, and while it certainly wasn't like new when done, it was better.

I think steel wool would turn a plastic wind screen opaque in about .5 seconds.

* Steel wool on glass is a neat trick though, thanks.. might try that.

Yeah if your time is worth anything to you then removing anything other than a small isolated scratch with micro-mesh is not cost effective compared to a new window. Most GA planes you can get even new windshields for around $300.

I've used lemon pledge on leading edges such as wing and struts before and after flights to minimize dead bugs sticking, works like a champ. Safe on fabric.

What aircraft windscreens are glass?

DO NOT use steel wool on AC windshields. Most them aren't glass and steel wool will render plastic or plexi opaque.
I have used steel wool for years on auto glass for years and it works magic. DO NOT use it on side mirrors, they ain't glass. Learned that the hard way.

Even on aircraft windshields that ARE glass, I wouldn't try the steel wool trick. Don't know if/what kind of coatings they have on them that would be damaged by the steel wool. Also if you damage a glass aircraft windshield they pretty much start around $17,000 and go up from there.

The loss of a hydrophobic coating due to cleaning with steel wool would likely cause your friendly mechanic to become not so friendly rather quickly.

No way. He just made $X having to replace the window!

I just googled what a new window would cost, and it's roughly $200 per side. That's a lot cheaper than I expected.
However, that would take away from my super-awesome Christmas vacation I'm planning. Pictures to follow...
