Rafale kills F-22....

....some discussion over at APC among the fighter crowd. The few fighter types here could probably put in their two bits. The Raptor may have been handcuffed with external tanks and I know some of my Hornet buddies had to go in fight with tanks on more than one occasion. The reversal at the end did cost the Raptor pilot though.

For those who don't know what the Rafale is, here it is. I hear it's a great airplane and IMO, a looker.

That a French fighter? It does look pretty bad ass. Seems like it out performed that Raptor pretty easily.

If you read the thread over at APC, it's normal to handicap are guys. Maybe we didn't either, who knows. Maybe the French pilot was that good, the Raptor isn't unbeatable but a clean Raptor will outperform any aircraft on the planet but there are some good planes out there, like the Rafale. My Hornet buddies tell me it's damn good.

So having no real clue what I'm watching. I heard fox 2 way early, which I assume missed. Then the raptor was all locked up, it looked like he could've thrown rocks and hit it for a while at the end... but I never heard anything. So what determines the kill?

You call FOX-2 when launching a short range missile, like the AIM-9. He scored a kill on the Raptor in the end. Hacker or others can get into the details much better than I can.

I've heard that maybe it was the Navy exchange pilot flying, got killed but his landing was shiite hot returning to base :)

Yeah I guess what I mean is I heard him fire early but the fight continued, so I assume the early missle missed, but then I didn't hear anything later, so I am just confused when/what determines the kill.

I have always thought the Mirage was a pretty sweet looking fighter. They love that wing design.

Gonna have to ask the strike/fighter guys here.

Didn't a T-38 "kill" an F-22 as well? Technology helps, but in the end it is only as good as the pilot will allow.

I've always loved the Dassault Rafale and the Eurofighter Typhoon. The F-22 pilot certainly didn't seem to be doing the whole 'turning on a dime' thrust-vectoring routine you see at airshows, although I've always heard that and the Russian "Cobra Maneuver" you see in the Sukhois are of questionable relevance to a real world dogfight. Still that Rafale pilot pulled 8 Gs (sounded painful!) and dropped down as low as 95 knots at one point, and it looked like he worked hard for that "kill" !

Never understood how the Rafale could be French.....

If it were made by Airbus, it would probably call you a "retard" every landing. Fortunately it's made by Dassault, and Jetcareers has enough corporate and freight-dog Falcon pilots that seem to like their airplanes... So I think the Rafale is okay. :D

My UAE customers always complained about the Mirages they bought being down more than up. That and the weak refueling probes, but lets face it, the UAE AF guys suck at refueling :)

Just out of curiosity, how relevant is 'dogfighting' any more? NOT saying I don't love it, and think that it is full of more awesome than can be comprehended, but just considering the technology available today (i.e., fire-and-forget, etc.), how likely is it that a pilot would do any actual dogfighting?

Personally, the only current European fighter that does anything for me is the Grippen. Such a neat looking plane and it's got a unique factor to it, since everyone and their brother doesn't fly it

We train for it for a reason. I wish the SME's would step in with their input.
