If you scroll down on the link he posts to, you see a radial engine...

Prop governor is in about the 1:30 position in this picture orientation I believe. Is that what you are talking about?

Nope, 7:30, looks almost looks like a cylinder, but it has a blue dot.

engine mount?

Thx for pointing out the prop-gov.

Prop governor (as the photo is oriented) is at the 3:00 position, the object with the Pratt & Whitney logo is the oil sump.

Correct - 3 o'clock as oriented - 1:30 if mounted on the plane (with the logo on bottom). As W would say, I misarticulated.

I knew what you meant, just trying to clarify for others ;)

And if it's a well maintained engine it'll have a penny safety wired into the plug above the sump ;)

Hey Waco,

Does that thing have Magnetos? If so, how are they organized? Is it two mags for all nine cylinders? I googled that engine number and did not find much.

Also, why did aviation get away from the radial engines to the flat fours we see today?

thx.

Why did it become wrong to play tag at recess or swat kids when they misbehaved. I'll tell you why: the degradation (I'd rather use p...ificaiton but not sure that's appropriate) of American youth, that's why.

You don't find enough real men out there to fly radials, so they had to start building flat-fours. It's a shame.

Yep. Two mags. On the R-1340 and R-985 (the ones I know well), one was for the front plugs, the other for the back. No half top, half bottom like horizontally opposed engines.

Good way to think about a radial is that it is the exact same as any other engine, but just round.

Thx,

Round is good.

I mean just looking at it, it makes sense.
