Race factor in the airlines

SkyBlue, do not worry about being hired as a minority or having weight issues. I too played football in high school and college. I was accustom to eating everything in reach and maintain a certain weight when i reported to training camp. I have lost some of that weight over the past two years but am by no means a small individual. I also have the minority card burning a hole in my back pocket. When I went to interview at an airline for a job several months ago I was never asked about either. They were much more interested in whether or not i could fly a plane with another person and whether or not I was a good guy. Occasionally I get asked about the size thing and once I tell them I played football in college we eventually end up talking about that for the duration of the flight.

The thing you need to focus on now is getting your ratings and making sure that for the next few months/years you work on perfecting your craft. When your number is called you show the interviewer that there is no one else in the room that can do the job better than you. Remember for as many s out there that fly airplanes there are many many more that are good people.
 
Yea I know I had a talking to about it from the wookie. I will be spending the week in bhb if you are going to be around. Have to sit reserve in the hotel all day Wednesday.

I just knew that I couldn't sit by in my "white-ness" and let it go...

I had to somehow let him know that he didn't "represent" me...

In retrospect, being older & wiser now, I wish I had just called him out on it...

It was my lame way of telling him that I didn't share his views, but it was kind-of back-handed... I know if it happened to me today I wouldn't hesitate to just say, "I don't appreciate that kind of talk, please keep it to yourself." Fortunately I haven't ever had to deal with this issue since then, so maybe we've made some progress...

Then there's the ones with the "attitude."

We have an extremely attractive black F/A. She's been dating one of our pilots for a long time. I had an F/O comment on her once. I said, "she's dating one of our pilots." He says, "I didn't know we had any black pilots in XXX."

I just looked at him and said, "We don't."

He was pretty quiet the rest of the day.

Yeah, so you know how I felt.

As I said above, since I'm "older & wiser" I feel much less of an obligation to simply get along; now I'd rather confront the person and directly challenege their views...

I'm not sure I'll ever change a deeply-ingrained prejudice, but I think an open rebuke is the way to go.

Of course the best way to undermine these insidious thought-processes is to increase the population of "non-white-male" pilots...

To this day we are still friends and communicate regularly. The only problem with her is that she graduated from Zoomie U and was a tanker toad. I guess we all can't attain the title of Marine!

So we should actively seek other than white male pilots so that any potential racism can be avoided? Or to teach those racist pilots that people unlike themselves can fly planes?
Seems like that is unfair to well...the non-racist pilots who want jobs. Probably acceptable though. {sarcasm}

I think that if Malcom X were still alive he'd simply respond to your post by saying "the chickens are coming home to roost."

In affect sharply saying, deal with it! We have for years.

For the most part I believe in affirmative action, but it's sad that it had to be created to level the playing field from the "good ole' boy" club.

I say end affirmative action, as soon as the power majority stops playing favorites based soley on race, or use nepotism. And, not a day before!

As a sort of addemdum, I again feel that it should be made clear that AA isn't just for blacks and racial minorities. It is also for women, the physically and mentally handicap, sexually discriminated individuals and others.

Stop just thinking of it solely based on race, because the powers that be discriminate on more than just the issue of race..
 
I know this thread got started with a simple question, which had a simple answer. It's starting to drift a little into a topic of greater depth.....affirmative action could have it's own 10 pager easily with no real "outcome."
