Quick question

The PTS for shortfield landings says touchdown 200ft before a specified point. It does not say it has to be the numbers. My philosophy on this is that its better to have usable runway in fron of you, rather than behind you. So why land long? And why would the airlines do it?
50' TCH and blah blah rabble certification landing distance and yammer.

But seriously, it's so that the gear are not dragged through the lights, localizer antennas, and orphanages.
