Questions about commercial written

Heya everyone,

So I'm going through the questions on the commercial written and trying to get studied up for this. I've run across a few questions that seem like they have wrong answers. I'll just go and use this thread for things that look like they are worded wrong and maybe someone can shed some light on this. First question.

5604 (H312) states:

"Why should flight speeds above Vne be avoided?"

The answer I would say to this question is because it is the max speed that the aircraft has been certified and tested to, and anything above that is exceeding the design criteria for the aircraft. The FAA says the answer is:

"Design limit load factors may be exceeded, if gusts are encountered"

I think that this answer is wrong because that would be the definition of the yellow arc of the aircraft. Vne is the absolute never exceed speed for the aircraft. While it is the max smooth air speed, operating ABOVE that speed can cause problems even WITHOUT wind gusts.

So am I crazy in thinking that this question is wrong?

Vne is actually the speed that should never be exceeded in a dive or other maneuver in normal smooth air conditions. It's normally computed to be roughly 90% of the design dive speed, sometimes referred to as Vd, and is marked as the red line at the top of the yellow arc. Beyond it, you're a test pilot. Severe damage due to gusts or simple over stress can occur since it's a grey area, if you will Vdf is the design dive speed which has actually been tested inflight and is known real-world.

Vne in practice has commonly been known as the never exceed speed, the red stop line. But it's actual definition is the above.

Everytime I give that explination, I get strars like Im from mars!! I was on my CFI check and I told my examiner that and he said "I didnt know that." Does that hold true just for aircraft certified under part 23 and part 25 or is that all?

I'm about to take the comercial written also. I think the key to this and pretty much any other multiple choice test is not to choose the one correct answer but choose the most correct answer. I agree with you on that question, and have found many other similar ones. I've also found some questions that have more than one correct answer but one that is more correct. I think the purpose of the written is more to test you on your test taking ability than to test your understanding. The oral is where you demonstrate you understand the material.

Yeah. The Comm test is almost the same as the PPL, but with less obvious answers. Where the PPL mostly had glaring obvious wrong answers, the Com has about three answers that could be right from a certain point of view.
