Question for 121 pilots

I was just wondering about a furlough question that came to mind. You are a second year FO that gets furloughed. The furlough is two years long. When the furlough is over, are you re-instated as a fourth year FO, or do you resume at two year status?

It depends on the particular airline and contract. It could be either way.

I have a buddy on furlough and he was let go a day before his 1st year. When he comes back he picks up where he left off. No sense in paying you 3rd year pay when you've only worked for the company for a year.

It depends. At one place I know you continue to accrue longevity for 90 days after furlough and then the clock stops. When you come back it picks up wherever it was at the end of those 90 days.

I think this is a good question, one most of us don't think about. Curious . . . So who of the current carriers with pilots on furlough will bring them back on at senority/pay based on their original hire date? I thought XJT and Delta worked that way.

Yes, the Delta furloughees accrued longevity during furlough. My current sim partner in Maddog training was the second to the last guy on the list prior to 9/11. He bypassed recall until May 2008. So, although he had never flown a plane at Delta Air Lines when he returned he started at eight year pay.

Thats pretty awesome though I bet those 7 years waiting really sucked.

This is actually a sticking point over here with the XJ furloughs coming onto the 9E list. We've got a few guys that were hired in late 08 that were thinking the XJ guys were actually going to be getting paid more, but longevity at 9E is different than date of hire. To get what their real longevity (for pay rates) is, you'd take the furlough date and subtract the hire date. Example: furloughed on 1/31/08 with a DOH of 1/31/09, you've got 1 year of longevity even though your DOH was two years ago. Some airlines have you accruing longevity and seniority while on furlough, a lot it's only seniority.
