Question about staffing levels.

I just read the Workforce Plan that was posted in the other thread, and at the end there was a list of each facility and its Low/High staffing goal, and the actual amount of staff as of the date of publication. I need to stay in the Chicago area due to my child (I'm divorced and I can't/wont move away from my son), so that leaves me with the following areas;

Rockford (Where I live.)
Madison (About an hour and 20 minutes commute.)
Milwaukee (About an hour and 45 minutes commute.)
Chicago (About an hour commute.)

I am only aware of those airports in my area, however any others would work too. My concern is that all of the ones listed for this area are either at the high level, or exceed the high level. I looked at others though, and this seems to be the trend. Are there still openings in my area? Does anyone have any idea on how many trainees Chicago area is looking for?

I really would need a placement that is within 2 hours of Rockford, IL so that I can live near my son. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I am also applying from the Chicago area and would prefer to stay around here. I noticed the same thing yesterday and it kind of freaked me out. Any info on this would be great.

I did notice that most of them seemed to be at that level, so hopefully that means that having a high staffing level doesn't mean there aren't any openings. I was thinking that it is possible that the numbers listed included a good number of people that are due for retirement soon, and therefore there will be several openings. I hope so, at least!

Do not believe the FFA's numbers as to what they consider "adequate" staffing numbers. They are constantly changing these as controllers retire so they don't look like they have a staffing problem.

ATLTRACON is right. We (my husband & I) did a tour a few days ago in south florida and the controllers in the tower were telling us that Chicago is a very easy market to get into because LOTS of people are trying to get out. I asked if it was because they don't like the management up there or because of the weather...they kinda looked at each other and said "...uh, the weather." I guess we know what that means. We would like to stay in south florida (but who isn't trying to get down here?) but the Chicago area is our other choice. But either way, the FAA isn't going to show a shortage of controllers anywhere, that's just begging for a CNN Headline News Announcement.

Those numbers are a bunch of crap. I think they counted everyone in the building, not controllers!

These answers are great to hear! I would really like to end up in the Chicago area (preferrably O'hare). I know that one of you said that people are avoiding O'hare like the plague, but I think I could manage being there... I have experienced my share of micro-managing bosses who constantly put tons of pressure on me in the past! Thanks for everyone's input!
