Question about practical tests.

I had a student go through an initial MEI with a FAA Examiner. The examiner stated that he did not have to sign the logbook after the test, where as a DE does. Does anyone have the FAR reference to this, I've searched and searched but cannot find anything. Thanks.

Not sure if its referenced in the FAR's, but it is referenced in thier Examiner handbook or guide (I think thats what its called). Hopefully someone knows what i'm talking about and can post a link to their guide. It's actually good reading, you can see why DE's do certain stuff and you can also find a whole lot of things that DE's do wrong.

DEs don't have to sign your logbook after a checkride either. Some do regardless, others only will if you ask them to.

I think you may be mistaken, the DE that I use told me that he has to sign the logbooks after a practical test. Thats where this whole argument came up, I had a student get a MEI with an FAA examiner and then a MEII with a DE who stated that a signature was missing, and we could not find out if it was needed or not being that they are the FAA.

I suggest you ask the DPE to show you that requirement in the DPE Bible, otherwise known as FAA Order 8710.3. If the DPE can't point to it, it isn't required.

Find FAA Order 8710.3 here:

Well, there's the item that appears in some form multiple times - at least once in each chapter dealing with a certificate or rating:

==============================
Sign an entry in the applicants records after the practical test. That entry must show the type of test, the duration of the flight portion, the outcome of the test, and the examiners designation number.
==============================

I guess some would read that as a requirement.

No thanks, I do not think I'll be asking this man anything. Maybe I should question him when one of my students pays him for his ride. That should make him very happy. He will probably thank me for questioning his knowledge.

But thank you for the reference. That answers my questions. Awesome job finding that, I owe you one. Thanks again.

Ask him =after= your student passes his ride. Don't hold DPEs in too much esteem - they really are just people. They don't know everything on every subject having to do with aviation and are sometimes willing to admit it.

Sounds to me like it is pretty common that the DE's not know ALL the rules either. I am sure there is a professional way to handle this and get the desired effect. Or you can just say "Hey ***clown!!! You gotta sign my logbook!! Jeez!! You would think that a DE would at least know that one....." and before the flight tell him "Hey, I am the PIC so keep your cake cruncher closed, and DONT TOUCH ANYTHING!!!" They love it when you show initiative and asume the command role. :rawk:

The DE in my area, insists that your long XC for PPL must include all legs over 50NM to qualify, and not simply one leg being at least 50NM as it clearlt states in FAR Part 61. Blah blah blah. The Government wrote these rules, you know that there is gonna be a lot different opinions as to exact meaning.

I have not had my logbook signed after any of my checkrides. Granted I used one DE for all my pre-CFI rides and the FAA for my CFI, but I have not heard that requirement before and no one has said anything about it.

Why not? He isn't doing you a favor. He works for your student.

Maybe I should question him when one of my students pays him for his ride.

Perhaps you should! After all, your taxes are paying for it - ask away!!

That should make him very happy.

And if it doesn't, so be it. It's not your job to make him happy. He's a public employee!

If your auto mechanic didn't know what he was doing, would you question it?

He will probably thank me for questioning his knowledge.

Or he'll just answer the question.

I deal with the FSDO Daily, sometimes several times per day. I question things all the time. Sometimes I'm right, and sometimes I'm wrong.
