Question about flying over an airport?

My instructor asked me what the recommended minimum AGL is when flying over an airport. (For instance, not landing but just flying through.) I can't seem to find the answer. Could someone please help me with where to find this information?

Thanks

I would generally say that as long as you are 500' or more above traffic pattern altitude (assuming uncontrolled) you should be fine. Be sure to announce your position for everybody's benefit though. At a towered airport....wherever they want you!

500 ft above TPA is where Jets fly their patterns

....... I think that is the case anyway

And some airports call for multiengine to have a higher TPA. I would fly at least 1000' above TPA at a minimum.

TPAs extend from 500 AGL up to possibly 2500 AGL, depending on the particular field. Check with the airfield for the uncontrolled airport you're flying over, and play it smart from there. Slightly above TPA (IMO, 500 to 1000') might make you lok like you're part of the pattern to someone without a radio or who's not listening. But the same gig of keeping a good lookout, doing it smartly, and radioing your intentions, should keep the operation safe. Beware of other items besides traffic patterns, such as parachute jumping in progress or in the immediate vicinity....something that will be generally far higher than the traffic pattern. Items that again, you'll find in your research of the field in the A/FD, or IFR/VFR supp, or sectional. Doesn't hurt to avoid airports laterally, if possible.
