Question about elements...

I just started working on my CFI.

Maybe I'm a little slow, but I don't understand what is being asked when I come across a question regarding elements.

For example "What are the elements of a short feild landing?"

As I understand it, elements are an overview of the maneuver and not the procedures on how to perform it. Right?

Can somebody set me straight?
 
You're getting way too tripped up on words here. I would think elements would refer to the different stages of the maneuver, and maybe the configuration for each. I would focus on knowing the maneuvers and less on semantics.
 
Thanks pscraig. I noticed you post on the ATP section as well. I'm trying to finish up the CFI pretest before my June 7 start date in Vegas.

Think "what pieces make it up?"

So, when asked, "What are the elements of a short field landing?" think less about the procedure of doing it than the skills that make it up.

So, for example, a short field landing involves (among other elements) precise altitude control, precise airspeed control, and the aerodynamics of slow flight, the use of flaps to increase descent angle without increasing airspeed.

The idea is to break the maneuver down to its component parts so that you can explain it better, understand why certain maneuvers come before others, and, when a student has trouble, you're able to identify the piece(s) that need work.
