Question about ATP certificate

If I understand the FAR's correctly you need a type rating to be eligible for the ATP Cert. Is that correct?

If so does that mean that if you got a new type rating you'd have to get an another ATP Cert for that aircraft?

Thanks.

No, The ATP certificate is exactly that; a Certificate. A type rating is a type rating. Two separate things. You don't need either to get the other.

So if you have one, but not the other, do you need the other to get the one? Or do you need another to get the other one? I forget.

huh?

You can get a type rating without an ATP. I think there are many, many type-rated Citation owner/pilots who are probably just private pilots!
