Question about a Delta airline flight

I was listening to JFK tower and watching www.flightarrivals.com to keep up with where all the planes were going and coming from and well I spotted a really ODD flight.
DAL9813. Firstly the flight number is WIRED!!!! Then I see the route Havana-JFK then JFK-LGA all on one flight number!!!!!
Goto Delta's website and they don't fly to Havana!!!
Anyone got an explanation??
Hoping Doug might be able to say what a Delta flight number starting with 98.. means.

Delta flight numbers in the 9000 range are flights that aren't in the schedule. They are used for charters, equipment substitutions, maintenance flights, and ferry flights.

In the case of the Havana flight this is a scheduled charter that Delta has been flying pretty much every weekend for over a year. Under the embargo US airlines are not allowed to schedule flights to Havana. But charter companies can arrange charters. So a travel company sells the flights and charters Delta to fly them.

The short flight from JFK to LGA was simply an empty ferry flight to put the aircraft back in position for scheduled flights.

OK?

Happy 4th.

Question, little off topic

If I were to start listening to live ATC and things like that, you think I could pick up the "pilot lingo." How do those pilots, and ATC and everyone else learn what the hell their saying lol! It's so confusing. And does anyone know where I could get a list of the alphabet from A-Z. Like A as in Alpha..B as in

thanks alot!

Yeah, listening to ATC is very helpful for use on the radio...I've been listening to the PHX feed and I have gotten to know A LOT more than what I knew before.

I flew on Christmas eve last year and ATIS was X-Mas.

Nothing like calling up ground saying you have information X-Mas.

Automated Terminal Information Service...Its a audio clip that pilots listen to, to inform themselves of the current weather at the airport. It updates every hour, near the end of each hour.

ATIS Example:

Phoenix Airport info KILO 0356z Wind 220 @ 3 Vis: 10 20,000 ft Scattered. Temperature 34, Dewpoint -6. Altimeter 29.80. Runway 26, 25R, 25L in use. Simultaneous approach is in use. Expect visual approach runway 25L, 26. Departing runway 25R. Aircraft from North expect runway 26, aircraft from South expect runway 25L. Fireworks in vicinity @ 500 AGL and below. Advise on initial contact you have information KILO.

ATIS?

Lol, sorry

You need to get a reference book and look up terms as you come to them. There's proably something free on line if you'll look.
It will definitely reduce your confusion factor and make this subject much more enjoyable.

While you're laid up, check out the AIM. Yeah, it's a long read, just this side of War and Peace, but it will give you a lot of information that you can use.

Thanks, y'all. I have an information book from my cessna pilot kit that i just should have looked in, will later on. I didn't know I was listening to an ATIS last week at a small airport..

Thanks again,
Joe

You may not have been listening to an ATIS. Did it end with "advise tower on initial callup that you have information Lima?" If not, then it probably wasn't an ATIS, just an AWOS or ASOS.

More stuff for you to look up!
