Qantas 747 Engine Blows Up; SFO Emergency Landing

I thought Boeing changed the design so they no longer do this quite a few years ago?

As far as I know, it's part of a certification requirement. Engines that are fuselage or wing mounted are only secured by a couple of bolts, so if the torque load is too high the engine will shear off the aircraft.

All of the lines, such as fuel, hydraulic and bleed air, have shutoff valves located so that if an engine shears off, then you can shut off those valves (usually with the fire handle) even if the engine is missing.

I like QF but good thing I'm flying DL 777 there in a couple weeks. Only 2 engines to worry about, not 4 :sarcasm:

Speaking of which any you guys want to hook a brother up and get me business class? SO sick of that flight.
