Q400 Start Up

You guys have hamsters? Here on the other side of the world we have 4 indian boys, one for each blade. We go through alot though, they never seem to get away in time but no worries, there's millions more.

I have never flown a 400, but I can speak about the 100/200/300. The PW100 series engines are started in feather. There is a 1 minute limitation on the starter, They would have seriously damaged the starter if it was running for 5 minutes.

The props are generally left in feather until the pushback is complete and the ground crew moves away from the aircraft. This is just to keep the props at the lowest possible rpm while the ground crews are nearby.

It's all about noise. Engines are quieter in feather.

SAAB starts in feather.

I seem to remember something about the faa getting all rectal about streoids and hamsters. They got mad because dopping the hamsters made you go faster, but the poor guys were burning out quicker. They were buff though!

Colder starts too. Helped engine life.

On the 200 I know if youre not careful you can start to 'self-push' even with the power levers not in disc but just in the first part of beta, sometimes if the brakes aren't set. Have to be careful cuz reverse taxi is prohibited!
