Q route, A route?

I was reviewing a few different low altitude enroute charts laying around the office in preparation for my CFII. On L-23 which covers the Naples area, there is what appears to be a Q route, but I don't think it is. Starting from the Cypress VOR/DME (CYY) there is a route Q102. However, its not in the usual blue color of a typical Q-route and also as far as I know, Q routes are only depicted on high altitude enroute charts. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the fact that it goes over possible international waters? Also there is an A-route below it, A509. I can't really find much info on either.

Q routes from what I understand are RNAV airways. A routes are "Amber" routes that are based on NDB facilities. See AIM 5-3-4.

There are also "red", "green" and "blue" routes in addition to "amber" routes. If you can find a Pre-2006 Charlotte Sectional...there used to be a Green Route in the Cape Hatteras area, it went to an NDB. I used to give that question to students during a pre-checkride oral.

Yeah, take a look at it if you get a chance on skyvector.com, again L-23...its not your typical Q route, its probably not even called that but it just starts with a Q so I don't know what else to call it. Q routes are typically in blue, this one looks just like a Victor Airway (black).

I need to pul out my AIM again but I don't ever remember lerning about A routes. I know J, V, Q, and T, but never heard of A. Are they just NDB airways?

I seem to remember a small article on this somewhere a while ago (real specific, I know) . Basically it said that there were a few Q routes that came out before the whole Tango up to FL180 and Quebec FL180 and above became standard. So there are a very few Q routes that exist below FL180.

You get what you paid for, and you paid nothing for this little bit, so take it with a grain of salt.

Just wait until you get to Europe. Upper November's, Upper Papa's, etc. :)

"Cleared direct South Hampton, Upper November 246, Biggen climb level four hundred, call you back for direct, well report radar heading to Maastricht one three four three seven two five"

Aroo?!
