PSA

I graduated high school with him and almost ended up working with him about a year before all of that happened. Pretty sure he is flying again, but not in our area.
Never even heard of that story before but saw the pic and recognized him from meeting him at an aircraft sales thing last year. Interesting...

Most of your helo guys know airspace pretty well, because they have to deal with Class D and C often (or B). Granted, their knowledge of Class A dimensions and requirements are probably weak, but that's expected.

Yeah, I mean we are talking about surface class E here, so legally, they weren't in the wrong.....at least I don't think. Get to be the subject of a hazrep about it though.....

True, but still a little homework regarding route of flight prior to getting airborne and hazardous areas therein to avoid, isn't asking for much.

Had a sweet encounter today at KNFE (NALF Fentress). Was coming into the overhead at our normal 350 KIAS to join the FCLP pattern. About a mile out I see a Cessna 172 co-altitude (at overhead break altitude) with me, and not moving on the canopy as he crosses perpendicular to the runway. Had I not seen him, we would have had a horrible midair over the numbers. VFR, not talking to anyone, not squawking, just trolling right through a nearly full traffic pattern (5 jets). I don't know what my PSA really is, aside from just not being an idiot. Maybe he was just trying to get up close to have a look, but he took absolutely no evasive action (I can't imagine him not seeing me, but he acted like he didn't) and I had to aggressively avoid him vertically while still trying to pick out everyone in the pattern and find my interval out of the break. Granted it isn't controlled airspace so I'm not sure if he was actually violating anything other than poor visual lookout/see-and-avoid, but it was potentially one of the dumber things I have seen someone do in an airplane. Anyhoo......just venting.
We used to go out to Fentress to do autos and hoisting practice when it wasn't being used by the fixed wing bubbas. For all the non military folks on here, FCLP = Field Carrier Landing Practice. The layout of an aircraft carrier's landing area is painted on the end of a runway and a mobile Optical Landing System or "Meatball" is used to practice carrier landings ashore.
