No Injuries As Regional Jet Saved By Overrun Material At Runway End

A US Airways regional jet had to abort a takeoff at Yeager Airport in Charleston, West Virgina Tuesday, but it was prevented from going over the edge at the mountaintop airport by a lightweight concrete material designed for that purpose.

Brian Belcher, a spokesperson for Yeager Airport, said there were no injuries among the 30 passengers on board the aircraft bound for Charlotte, NC. The airport was closed while the airplane was cleared from the overrun area.

Belcher told the Associated Press the engineered materials arresting system (EMAS) performed as designed. It was installed about a year ago as a safety measure at the airport.

This is the second airliner this year that has been saved by the overrun material. Another US Airways flight overran the runway on January 19th, and wound up in the EMAS. The NTSB preliminary report indicates that PSA Airlines d.b.a. US Airways Express flight 2495, a Bombardier CRJ-200, registration N246PS, rejected the takeoff and ran off the end of the runway at Yeager Airport, Charleston, West Virginia. The airplane stopped in the engineered materials arresting system (EMAS). There were no injuries to the 30 passengers or 3 crew members onboard and the airplane received minor damage. That incident is still under investigation.
 
Who knows what happened with this one but there are just runways out there where V1 passes by and all I can think are "yeah right." Just absolutely no way to stop in time at that point. I don't know if it's calculated wrong or what.

At the operation I fly at, there's one particular runway where we'll pass over the departure end piano keys at 30' AGL...with both engines. Supposed to be 35' with an engine out at V1 right???

I just don't understand what is behind some of the calculations at some airports.
 
Thankfully no one got hurt!

...and you know what's going to have emphasis in recurrent next year - Takeoff performance in ground school and rejects in the sim.

Because of an Associated Press error, a brief in Saturday's Local & State section contained an erroneous report about an aborted takeoff at Yeager Airport in Charleston, W.Va. The story was actually from Jan. 19, 2010, and was mistakenly transmitted by the Associated Press.

N246PS is the reg of the aircraft involved in the Jan 19th incident. :)
 
It's amazing... All you've got to do is change the byline date and you can magically create a whole new accident.

Speaking of US Airways RJs though, I did watch an AWAC 200 torch his engine on the ramp in CLT yesterday. Ignitors only work if you haven't been blowing fuel out the back of the engine for 30 seconds already.

Does the CRJ200 have autostart? Or is it a semi-autostart? Or just an old school manual start?

Sorry... No pictures. I'm sure somebody has them though. It burned for a bit. Long enough for the people to bail anyways.

No auto start on the 200. The FADEC on the 7 and 9 is though.
 
I've seen the igniter thing done before and it didn't torch the engine wonder why it did this time.

Hard to imagine you can make a mistake like misreporting an accident that's pretty messed up!!

I just flew this plane 2 days later, it was a bad FCU that caused it apparently. They replaced the FCU and its fine. Had nothing to do with the ignitors or pushing them after introducing fuel.

This is patently false. FCU issue.

Edit - didn't mean to come off rude, as I can see how most people would think it was an ignition error.
