PSA Charlotte Base

Could you guys please clear up something for me? I'm looking at PSA, I'm 40 years old, with a wife and a 6 year old. They only way I'm going to make a jump to the airlines is if I can avoid commuting. I really need to get my family down to where her parents live so that she has some sort of support structure while I'm gone. Charlotte is pretty much the only option in this scenario. I've heard that it's hard to get off reserve at CLT because it's a popular base. My first question is, what are the chances I would be awarded CLT if I requested it? Second, how long would you guess I would have to fly reserve based in CLT? Third, when you're on reserve are you mostly sitting around not flying or is it more common that you end up flying anyway? I've heard with the DCA base opening up that it may help open up more room in CLT. I'm trying to make this work, but I really need to get my head wrapped around this before I'll feel comfortable making the jump. Thanks in advance.

Bases come and go.

That said, Regionals get shuffled around pretty often.

CLT is a fortress hub so it's probably ok but...

See: Pittsburg (USAir), Memphis (NWA), DFW (Delta).

This.

The beginning of your airline career is when you probably need to be the most flexible.

Even if you get hired with PSA and are able to be based in CLT, make tentative plans with the family on "what happens if..." Things can change so quickly.

I'll be going through InDoc on the 16th. I have a buddy of mine who is almost to sims. I'll see what the word is. The DCA base opening in March will probably cause a little movement but who knows until all is said and done.

Right now we have new hires getting CLT at about 5 months on property, so not immediately, but not long after IOE.

Not long after that people can get awarded a build up line, which means you have a schedule for the following month, but not a lot of flexibility.

Lastly, I'd expect as a reserve to fly a fair amount.

DCA will probably make CLT even more senior, as it went WAY Jr on the FO side, but as more get hired underneath you your choices broaden.

Feel free to ask away if you've got any more questions.

Been here 3 years. Rsv sucks, but is not as long as it once was. DCA pulled about 20 lines from CLT but, its still a strong base. You may be able to hold clt out of training...(Im not honestly sure, dont really check my company email often) but you may be sitting short call for awhile. Also the more we hire, the fatter the fo list gets which equals the less you will get used.

If you have any questions shoot me a DM. I don't know much about being a rsv fo anymore, but I can fill you in on line flying ca life.

Thank you for the info. The way I understand it, you pick your top 2 choices of bases and you will get awarded one of them. So if I lived in the Greenville SC area I could technically pick CLT and TYS and still be able to drive either. Is this a realistic expectation and what are your thoughts on this?

Pretty realistic, however CLT and TYS are our most senior bases for FOs. It will take a little longer in those bases to hold a line.

Greenville is probably a little too far away to do short call from home. Once you have a line or long call though it would be easy.

And you'll actually specify all 5 bases in your order of preference. Because we keep having awards for new FOs you'll get your base of choice eventually.

You should re-write that in 18-point Arial Black font, all caps.

Did you even sit reserve as a captain?

Nope. I by passed waiting for my summer vacation with the wife. Actually worked well, since all these prior 121 dudes were coming in and upgrading right away they stacked the CA side with reserves and I could hold a buildup right out of OE. And that was in the summer of 15'. Been round one since Feb 16'.
