Protest at SWA Headquarters

Remember that former AirTran guy I posted about who was contemplating quitting over the vaccine? Here’s his latest diatribe that he apparently sent to Southwest leadership:

I ain't reading all that.
I'm happy for u tho.
Or sorry that happened.

Attritting 2% of a pilat group in an expensive inconvenience. Facing 8%-ish attrition means you're gonna have to start cancelling flights and suspending routes as the pipeline has only so much capacity to replace them. Maybe we see Southwest do some short-term capacity purchase agreements?

Bro, unless you are within 5 yrs of retirement, people are not walking away from a $300k+ /yr job.

They will whine louder than any CFM56 attached to a 737, but in the end, they will take the jab.

Not if they have talked themselves into believing that they have power in numbers. Within that echo chamber their conspiracy theories are galvanized. I have only flown with two vaccinated captains all summer long.

This week I'm flying with a guy who just filed a religious exemption. He claims that his doctor, who runs a "holistic wellness clinic", told him not to get the shot. He was at the protest the other day. The company basically has told the group that if they file for an exemption it will almost certainly be approved. So even though this guy is a charlatan he believes that he is a freedom fighter - and it looks like the company is going to let him get away with it.

At the end of the day the company isn't going to cancel a bunch of flights over the holidays due to lack of staff. They'll accept questionably fabricated religious exemptions and look the other way just to keep the metal moving. And those who believe that the vaccine is somehow a global left wing conspiracy will be further emboldened.

We've had several guys with greater than 10 years to go already leave.

The people who are surprised by this are the same people who deny the idea that religion causes violence, bigotry, etc. When you believe something, truly believe it, then you are capable of just about anything in support of that belief. Whether it's giving up a $300k job, or blowing yourself up on a street corner for Allah. The only cure to all of this is enlightenment values. But sadly, we have smart people who defend fanciful thinking.

I don’t think the OSHA regulations will allow those with exemptions to continue flying. Our NJ division is already under this executive order mandate. They cannot work with exemptions. They can use paid time off until that is exhausted. Thereafter they are not entitled to any benefits (unemployment, disability) and only to a reasonable accommodation of unpaid leave to maintain employment status. But they lose benefits. People complied and got vaccinated. These are people who make very little, but anywhere that they could go to required it for new employees. So, they did what they needed to do.

We also held town halls with mandatory attendance live or viewing the recording with a quiz. The doctor providing the information was very credible and many cited that as a reason why they changed their minds.

He also talked about how he got COVID in April, 2020 and almost died. He was hospitalized for 7 weeks. His wife also got it from him. He talked all the guilt he felt, the fear for his children and what would happen if he and/or his wife died and how they would fare. He talked about what is was like and all he endured. It was very powerful.

I know a pilot who was a COVID denier, got COVID, and was hospitalized for about a week because he had trouble breathing. He went from "it's a hoax" to requesting "thoughts and prayers"....and with all of that, he still refuses to get vaccinated and is completely against the mandate.

It has nothing to do with health, COVID, or the vaccine with many of these people. It is political for most. They want to be obstructionist just for the sake of creating turmoil.
