Protecting us from ourselves...

I just don't see the big deal here.. It has been proven (statistically) that these types of approaches have a higher risk associated with them.

Why not ask the company to get a RNP or GPS 04L I see there is one in place already for 04R
Stepping outside your house is statistically higher risk than remaining inside of it.

Or for a more appropriate analogy... flying in less than 10 and clear is statistically higher risk than flying in VMC.

i enjoyed par approaches when i had to take students out to mcas yuma as well as fhu. glad to keep the controllers current! :)

You mean ASR, right? I did the same thing, had a gentleman's agreement with the controllers that I would make their quota of ASRs and in exchange they'd work with me on my other practice approaches if it was busy/etc.

par as a flight instructor. we dont have the equipment on board to shoot a true approach but the controllers would always ask as we were coming in if we wouldnt mind doing the approach for their currency. it was the foundation but not a true approach.

But in this example why shoot the circling? If there was ever an accident / incident as a result you made the noose to hang yourself.. as there are many straight in approaches available?

I can see where they are coming from on this.. Why do you care so greatly about the approach? Because it saves a few mins of the airlines time?

I have never done the approach, but I assume there is no straight in because that would cause you to have to be vectored into airspace that is already full.

Pilots like to fly, not sit on the ramp with the engines shut down waiting for a wheels up time.

KNYL has both.

These restrictions are only annoying when they get put on your type as "CIRC. APPCH - VMC ONLY.". It makes your type rating useless for lot of work outside of your airline, unless you want to pony up $2k to go to flight safety and have it removed.

I don't think that any RNAV/GPS-type approaches to 04R would authorize circling south and west of the runway. Probably would require VMC at least.

Im not saying that BE19 - I'm saying if it is such a big deal to land 04L then the airline could I'm sure get an RNP/RNAV for 04L

ExpressJet's EMB-145's are approved for RNAV approaches, but only a handful of pilots are trained for it.

I'm just gonna go for the 2 for 1 and get the 737 type. If I've got to spend a few grand to get the VMC restriction removed to fly outside the US, I might as well go ahead and get a type out of the deal.

The restriction is applicable to each type. So getting a 737 without the restriction won't remove the VMC limit on your CRJ type.

Right, but it'll remove it from the ATP. Odds are pretty slim of me flying a CRJ overseas right now anyway. :)
