Hello everyone here on Jet Careers. I am a first time JC person here and have been looking at these threads over the past year or so while I have been in the military. I am so glad to be home and am ready to start doing some flight training and pursue my dream and goal of becoming an airline pilot. I know that many times these threads can be a bit “spirited,” negative (to say the least) and biased. However, I have done A LOT research and spent A LOT of time and energy looking at different flight schools and academies and would like some no nonsense constructive information about these schools. My situation is that I have a wife and 2 children (ages 1 and 3) and am 32. So I really don’t want to mess around. I want the best training for my money and get the most out of it and I want to use my VA money, with the possibility of a direct path to an airline. I have done some flight training before I joined the Army at an FBO (never finished my Private) and don’t really want to do that because I didn’t think that it was as well structured and most of the instructors there have been instructing for more than 2 to 3 years and waiting around for multi engine time and waiting for someone to interview them, as well. So here is some of the information I have found. And this is the order of the order of schools that meet what I am looking for. Keep in mind I will need some living expense money of around $2K per month and my wife is a nurse and makes pretty good cash! Talking to most schools they say it takes around 10 months or so to finish as a student. I figured 14 months to be safe. I may not need it, but it is good to be worse case senerio. Since most schools pay you around $1,000 per month as a CFI, I figured I would have to cut back then in my living expenses when I get to that level or have my wife work overtime! Also, I figured in the ‘average’ pay for the airlines they say they place their graduates with to see what the first couple of years would be like. I put these in order of schools that I liked, as far as placements, airline agreements, pay after training.
1- Regional Airline Academy- Cost: $72,000 with type rating/ Time to Airline: 14 to 24 months/ Plus costs with living expenses @ $2K per month while a student for about 14 months is $28K bring the total to $100,000. Airlines hiring are Express Jets, American Eagle, Trans States. Avg. pay for first officer 1st yr $21k, 2nd yr pay $34k. VA approved.
2-Flight Safety- Cost: $76,000/ Time to Airline: 12 to 24 months/ Plus cost of living @ $2k per month is (at worst 14 mos to finish as student) $104,000. Airlines hiring are ASA, American Eagle, Express Jets. Avg pay 1st yr 20k, 2nd yr pay 37k. VA approved.
3- Delta Connection Academy- cost is $68,000/ time to airline: 16 to 24 months/ cost with living expenses @ 2K per month (at worst 14 mos as a student) is $96,000. Airlines hiring: Comair, ASA, Express Jets, Chautauqua, American Eagle, SkyWest, Tran States. Avg Pay for FO position 1st yr 23k and 2nd yr pay is 38k. VA approved.
4- ATP- cost of program from 0 to airline is $81,000 for quickest path/ time to airline is 12 months. Cost with 14 months of living expenses @$28K is $109,000. Airlines hiring: Express jets, Chautauqua, Great Lakes, American Eagle, Cape Air, Pinnacle. Avg pay 1st year FO is $19,000 and 2nd yr pay 32k. No VA.
5-Pan Am- cost of program: $68,000/ time to airline is 24 months/ cost with living expense of $28k for 14 months of training is $96,000. Airlines hiring: Chautauqua, Great Lakes, Mesaba, Piedmont, Chicago Express. Avg pay 1st yr is 19k and 2nd yr pay is 29k. VA approved.
At the end of the day, I found that these schools are all going to run me around $100K when all is said and done. The main thing is, which school is going to get me the job with the best regional airlines in the business and which school has the best contacts with the airlines. Any feed back from alumni from these schools or current students, would help.

If you want the fastest path to a regional airline, get your private or at least solo at your local FBO then go to ATP and become an MEII and get hired by them to instruct. You will be on your way in no time. I know alot of people say that "oh, I'm not a good teacher or a people person and don't want to instruct". I know a certain Captain that would say a person like that has no business ever being in the left seat of a two person cockpit and last I checked airlines liked to hire future captains over a person who just wants to be a FO.

Go through your training without getting your CFI rating and you are walking on thin ice!

All these affiliations with airlines that you read about is just marketing. Sometimes it works but if you sign up today with school XYZ that has an affiliation with airline ABC do you think that affiliation is still going to be there in 9 months or a year? Maybe, mabye not. If United goes bust, I doubt skywest will be doing alot of hiring. If US goes down will Mesa or Wisky? still be hiring? If Mesa underbids Expressjet when their CO contract is up you can probably count on lots of expressjet layoffs.

Not saying any of that will happen but my point is, go out get your CFI, and give yourself the best shot possible at getting hired to fly and get paid for it plus as a CFI you will learn alot more!

Good luck with your choice though!

I believe you have done your homework with respect to each of the aforementioned flight schools. I have toured all of the big ones, Sierra (when it was doing well), PanAm, DCA, FSA, and a local visit to one of ATP's locations. Put it this way, I am so anal that I created detailed spreadsheets for each school. I believe either FSA or ATP are the best out there, even though the way they teach/train is different.

I am also in a similar situation as you are. 34 with a daughter and a serious g/f of 5 years. I have three questions for you. Do you have or plan on attaining a B.S./B.A degree? Secondly, have you read the threads for the different academies? There is a lot of insight on the schools which can be found from reading different threads. I was dead set to attend PanAm and then began reading what people had to say. I changed my mind. If you continually read about people defending one place against others written attacks that may be a red flag. My last question is have you toured the prospective places you may want to train at? If not, I suggest doing so.
Depending on where you are, you could drive to an ATP location or call them up. I believe PanAm is moving from FL. DCA will fly you out there to do their tour but you wont have time to go to FSA or Ari-Ben. Do the FL on your own dime, take a vacation there and visit FSA and Ari-Ben, then drive up to the ATP at Jacksonville.
Good luck. Maybe we will meet up at ATP if that is what you decide on. Thank you for your service too.

Can i ask where you go the $81,000 number? That seems a little high, alot high actually. Were you calculating the cost of the direct track program? I wouldnt recommend the direct track program, especially if money is a big concern. If you have a rich mommy and daddy that wants to fork the bill, more power to ya. But it doesn't sound like thats the case.

But its graet to see that you did your research, you're already ahead of the game. good for you. good luck

yeah, with interest im not even in the 80s. At the other schools you will be into the 100s with interest.

If you really want the fastest, I'd recommend ATP's Private Pilot Program and then the Airline Career Pilot Program. I just completed the Private Pilot Program with 85 hours in just 45 days and am slated to start their 90-day Airline Career Pilot Program in a few weeks. THAT is the fastest way. Just make sure you're motivated and possess lots of initiative. No one will hold your hand but with some work, you'll see results immediately.

Modesto, do you live in Modesto by chance?

I'm asking because I live in Fresno and am considering the Sacramento ATP location for a possible future training site. I thought maybe there was a chance you trained there with a name like that.

Greetings,
It sure does sound like you have done your research. I applaud you for your efforts. Its always best to be well informed. BLEE may have a point about your numbers attending ATP. I don't think the price will be that high. As far as living expenses go, you could borrow a little more from Key Bank (or whoever they are going with now) to ease the burden on your wife. It will help you with paying bills and having food to eat....lol I have met many people like you in your situation believe it or not. I'm sure you won't be going with ATP because you are not going to be able to utilize your VA benefits. I don't blame you. Let the government pay for it! You will get great instruction at those schools. The only downer I see is that it will be a longer road. Time is of the essence my friend. You could be working for the airlines in about a years time going with ATP. It has worked for a lot of us out here. Good luck!

P.S. - TimBuff ......."What's uppppppppp?" Call me. LATE.

MCP, I live in the East Bay city of Moraga, about 30 minutes east of San Francisco. "Modesto2" is the most common standard terminal arrival route to SFO and hence, my sn. I'm doing all of my training in the Jacksonville location but would love to come back to Sacramento for flight instructing. Feel free to shoot me a message if you have any questions about training.
