Professional Logbook software for Mac OS X

Hello All,

Just wanted to put it out there, I was looking for an electronic logbook solution for Mac OS X about a year ago and was unable to find one. Being a software engineer I decided to write my own. If you use a mac, and you fly, you should check it out! http://www.coradine.com

Cheers,

Noah

The reasons for using logbook software are numerous. Most likely you are already aware of what you can do with a spreadsheet and may have put some times into Excel so you could generate various totals, or figure out the info needed for completing an 8710 if you're flying under FAA regulations.

LogTen has many advantages over a spreadsheet:
<ul type="square">[*]Easier interface, designed specifically for flight tracking
[*]Automatic Generation of FAA 8710 Form totals for any category
[*]Creation of professional printed reports with powerful HTML
formatting capabilities
[*]Power of fast, reliable integrated SQL database.
[*]Your data is written to the database every time a field is changed, so you're much less likely to lose any data should your computer crash for some reason.
[*]The relational nature of using a database, means that you only enter aircraft info for a given aircraft once, then that aircraft is "linked" to each flight that was in that aircraft.

This means that if you change some information or add something new to this aircraft later it applies to every flight that was in that aircraft.

You also have the idea of child records, so for example a given flight can have an infinite number of legs, operations, crew members, and your own custom properties. You can't do that with a spreadsheet.
[/list]

From the Airline Captains and commercial pilots I've spoken with, they all recommend putting your time in an electronic logbook as early as possible to prevent yourself having to do it all at once when you've got hundreds if not thousands of hours. Having your time at your fingertips in any combination is critical for interviews when the time comes. If all you've got is paper logbooks, or even Excel it's going to be time consuming to answer
questions like:

How many multi-engine night landings do you have in Aspen, CO?
How much PIC time do you have in a Cessna Caravan? Amphibian?
Instrument Time?

Clear skies, mild winds, and happy flying!

I also do some MOSX coding on the side. What's the licensing model for the app. BTW, the icon is epic. You do that?

No, no, no - I know why someone would use logbook software, silly! I mean, why would anyone need it for a Mac?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Looks to me like you're peddling software.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Yep, thanks.

The licensing model is just a simple purchase, which will give you free updates until the next major version (either 2.5 or 3.0) for $49 CDN ($39 USD). Compare to most PC logbook solutions which are generally twice that.

Feel free to send me an email if you have any questions.

Cheers,

Noah

I was just about to ask the same thing. Me wonders if Mr. DT gave the o.k. I would think he finds this on that slippery slope of getting free advertising.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I don't think we'd better start the Mac vs. PC discussion here, it could get way out of hand. Macs are superior in so many ways there wouldn't be enough space to post them all here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

As far as "peddling software", I understand the aversion to solicitation; however, in this case, I feel that as a fellow pilot, it's legitmate to share the fact that this useful tool exists. Whether or not you (or anyone else) chooses to go to the site and check it out is obviously up to you. Also, I assumed, that based on the topic anyone not interested in Mac OS X logbook software need not read any further.

Cheers,

Noah

Calm down, Buddy!!! See, if you see me at the club and try to sell me some life insurance before you say, "Hi, I'm Bob and I live in Franklin...", I'll think that you're only there to sell me insurance....

So, relax and try to introduce yourself!!!!

That's funny, I feel like I'm in that movie "Anger Management"... I didn't realize I sounded upset. I'm perfectly calm... just offering a justification.

I'm happy to introduce myself, although "Hi, I'm Noah Lieberman, and I'm from Nelson, BC, Canada...." didn't seem like a good topic title... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm not sure you're really interested in my life story, so tell me what you want to know and I'll be happy to share.

Cheers,

Noah

We're just trying to help out a new user. See earlier post from Doug Taylor, JetCareers founder:

Primarily the reason why the post was moved for review because it's more or less advertising for rentals.

In a general sense, when it comes to advertising goods or services on jetcareers, make sure you contact me or one of the moderators before doing such. Next thing you know, people will start springing up with competitive goods and/or services and if I've got to 'nip it in the bud'
, I've also got to deal "Hey, you like XXX do this, why can't I?"

Plus, I'm very careful about who I offer advertising to. If, for example, you turn out to be a scam artist, which I'm certainly not accusing you of but just saying for example's sake, then it also looks bad for the credibility of my website.

Well, it's kind of what we do here! We tell our stories to each other, make friends and then we keep in touch. Then, after we know that someone is sincere and they don't just want to hustle us with their overpriced software, maybe we'll buy their overpriced software!

Mostly, though, we talk about flying.

So, tell me, what kind of flying do you do?

Sadly, I haven't been able to afford to fly in almost a year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I've always loved flying and took my first lesson in southern Oregon when I was 16. Unfortunately 3 lessons wiped out my savings, and I kind of had to put the dream on hold.

In December of 2002 I was fed up with my job at a large computer company and decided I was going to try and become an Airline pilot. I finished ground school, got a first class medical, passed my written FAA exam, logged 23 hours and made my first two solo flights before my credit card maxed out.

I'm married with two children, and I came to hard realization that even though I'm only 29, I wasn't in a position to get a job flying jets any time soon, and even if I did the paycut would have been tremendous.

So over the past year, I've found solace in writing logbook software for Mac OS X (not my day job) and hoping that someday maybe sales will actually be enough to finish my private pilots license and start flying again. Until then I just have to torture myself at airshows and stare dreamily at every passing jet.

So if you, or anyone you know wants to get away to an absolutely gorgeous, little town nestled in the mountains of South Eastern BC, I'll be happy to buy you lunch! We've got a great little Airport on the lake, and you can actually walk right to down town from the field (CZNL).

I neglected to mention that I relocated from Colorado (I did most of my flight training out of KBJC) to Nelson, BC this summer, which has been fantastic. But maybe I'll save that for another post... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm giving Corradine a "pass" because he's new! But you guys know the story!

And thanks JEP for finding my thread speech about advertising at jetcareers.com.

I didn't realize I had a twin... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Why is it that a bunch of software engineers want to be pilots? I'm sure that's come up somewhere along the line...
