Private Written Exam

Quick question, I have a student who has to wait 90 days before receiving a medical. In the mean time, they want to study on their own and take the private written exam. Is a home study course considered basically the student studying their books at home or do they need to purchase a vendor course (King, Sporty's). Thanks for your input.

You are referring to 14 CFR 61.103(d)(1) which talks about a "home-study" course.

There is no further definition, so it is whatever you, the instructor making the endorsement, determines is adequate to meet the requirement.

I like to see 3 online practice tests passed with a score of 80% or better before I give someone an endorsement. I have yet to have anyone bust a written, so I guess they have had sufficient home-study.

Thats what I do mostly. I make them buy the Gleim software (just because that is what I know) and make them bring in the printouts as they go along so I can see if there are any areas they need help in, rather than relying on them to tell me what they are struggling with.
