Private Planes are affordable???

I thought this was a pretty amusing story from CNN.

Some of my favorite quotes:

"You can literally read a book up there," said Neibauer, who sold Huntsman her first four-seater plane for $326,000 three years ago. And read is exactly what she does. "Last year, we got through Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn," Huntsman said.

Something about the pilot reading a book doesn't sound very safe.

OR

"I think flight is much more accessible than ever," said Lee Brinley, 47, a financial analyst from Carol Stream, Illinois, who recently fulfilled a lifelong dream by buying a $300,000 Lancair kit plane.

$300,000, that's it. Let me go get my checkbook!

Well, they are pretty affordable for some people. IF you can afford a beach home (which many people can . . .), you can afford an airplane!

It depeds on what you mean by a private plane. There are some old Cessna 150's for sale on eBay for about 10,000. 300,000 is not affordable to the average person. It's affordable to the very wealthy/rich, but then they can afford almost anything.

"financial analyst," that's all you need to read. $300K to him at 47 (assuming he started out of college) is a drop in the bucket. He's obviously lost touch with the average Joe American's income.......

I wouldn't pay $300K for a house, much less an airplane.

I know that there are affordable planes out there. It just would have made more sense if it said, "Joe Schmoe buys Cessna 152 for $15,000"

wow, i hope you don't plan on living in south fla where the avg 3/2 1200 sqft home runs >$300k.

$300k doesn't get you very much nowadays.

Im just about to close on my new house in texas its 4/2.5 2700 SQFT
$193,000

Sounds like Florida is like california with housing prices..

Affordable is very relative.

However, most people wouldn't find $300K afforable.

That said you can buy a 20 year old C172 for around $40K, that's been well maintained and doesn't have a ton of hours on it.

I once asked about buying an aircraft here and was told by a very wise (if not cantankerous) JC'er that I could buy a new C172 that will go 120 Kts and cost $300K, or I could buy an older C172 that will go 120 Kts and cost about $40K. The only difference is about $260K.

That's my story...and I'm stickin' by it.

Nope. That's exactly why I don't want to live in S FL. Housing costs are insane. That house would cost $250K in ORL and about $120K where my parents live. They bought a 3/2 on 2 acres in Mississippi for $110K. Golf course living in their area starts at $100K. That's one of the reasons I will never even look at buying a house in Celebration, FL. I can get a 4/2 with a pool for the price they want for a 3/2 and the privelege to live in Eisner's backyard.

Depends on where you live. In FL, NY, DC or CA, I'd agree. $300K around north Mississippi would get you a palace.
