Pres Fox SLC Visit

As we were on approach to YUM 2 nights ago, I was witness to one of the most brutal, heartless, funny, comments I've heard in a long time. Center clears us for the visual and as were skirting the mexican border, he mentions numerous low flying targets under 1000' AGL. My FO and I look down and see helicopters circling with their light guns blazing onto the ground. It was obvious who they were and what they were doing. So without missing a beat, he says in the most calm and quiet voice" yeah.....they're helicopters looking for mexicans". I didn't know whether to smack him because of what he said, or laugh because it was funny because it was so politically incorrect. We laughed about that up until last night on our approach into CLD when he barfed short final at 100' into his lap because the subway from earlier in the day didn't agree with him. I guess thats what he got huh?
Funny thing was on the approach into CLD I could hear him breathing very hard and I thought it was because we were flying into a short field, with no reverse(EEC's deferred) and had a challenging approach, I looked at my speed and altitude and thought we were on the money with everything. Finally while were taxing to the ramp I smell the mess. He had his hot mic off and it was dark so I couldnt hear, nor see him throw up. But I sure smelled it after. Ahhhh. It was nasty! Now that I mention it, our FA also threw up the day before because of all the turbulence we had. I must suck at this flying thing.

I'm curious; since they probably were "helicopters looking for Mexicans," how, in your view, was it politically incorrect to state that fact??
 
Also, not to nit-pick, but did you also just say you had a crewmember go incapacitated (throwing up) on short final? Aren't you supposed to both be monitoring the approach, making call-outs, etc.? Did you file a report saying you had a crewmwmber go incapacitated in a very crucial phase of flight? And why would you say this is "what he got"? Very professional...

Short final at 100' is not where you want to be talking in the other guys ear. The final call out is made at 500' AGL, then if the NFP see's a deviation from a Ref speed or altitude, then the correction should be noted. I'm curious, what call outs, do you make at 100'? Does your airline have these call outs in the Standard Operating Procedures?

Report that he went incapacitated? For what how long? Maybe 3 seconds while he was throwing up? How exactly is that going to effect anyone? I could see if maybe he clunked out while on approach and he was flying the airplane, but if I'm at the controls at 100' short final about 3 seconds away from landing, it's a non event.

Suppose you reported this to your airline after it happend. They ask why he was "incapacitated" and you say because he threw up for about 3 seconds. I highly doubt they will agree that this would qualify as incapacitated, and second you as a professional pilot that you are, would lose some credibility.

If this were in the outside world, I would say that your comment would be in line with someone just trying to make a scene out of nothing.



If your avatar indicates the type of equipement you are flying, I assume you are flying single pilot freight. In your case, throwing up short final would be considered a more serious event, but being that we are a two pilot cockpit, it poses less of a threat if any at all.

Well, considering whats been going on the past few weeks with immigration, I would say that its a touchy subject. But I could be wrong, you could be one of those strong opinioned people that thinks this is his country and every immigrant should go back to their own country. But I won't go into detail about whose land this really belongs too, because I"m sure that type of person I described above woule dismiss it as old news. Hopefully, your not one of those people.

Maybe we're missing something here, but he said "They're looking for Mexicans." What else would they be doing on the border with bright lights? Sounds like a routine observation to me, the word "Mexican" does not make something politically incorrect...

Actually, I personally believe that we should let in any Mexican that wants to work. However, I also hate, HATE HATE P.C., language-Nazis who think that anything which might possibly offend someone should be verboten. If they were probably helicopters looking for Mexicans, then it can't conceivably be politically incorrect to say so.

Agreed upon %100. Just because they were looking for Mexicans it does not mean it is offensive or rude. if they were looking for Brazilian hypothetically would you have been offended.

Bad analogy.

It's the MEXICAN border, why else would one have spotlights and helicopters on the border?
