preferred speed down final

just curious but what speed do pilots prefer down final, between the IAF and FAF. 180, 170, or 160? I'm sure aircraft type plays a role, but on average.

Personally, I prefer 180 to the FAF but I understand spacing and all that other fun stuff can hamper that.

170/180 seems most common and preferred, but it also depends where the FAF is. We have to be configured and at our final approach speed by 1000 AGL. If the FAF is 7 miles out we can probably do 180 all the way to it and then start slowing. If the FAF is 4 miles out we're going to cheat and slow early because there's no other way we can get slowed in time.

Whatever flaps 10 speed is that day.

In a turbo-prop, anything less than 250 is annoying AF.

The King Air is never the right speed for the prevailing traffic.

We get out climbed by everyone. We clog FL350 at .48 mach and we are way too fast for everyone on final and we have to drag it in at the configured jets approach speeds.

If I'm not slowed down by ATC, I will cross the FAF or 5.0 DME at 200kts in the CRJ. You can be fully configured, on speed, and stabilized by 1000ft all day every day. While you can (and I have) do 250 to the marker, you will be pushing being stabilized by 500ft.

I'll do 150 to the numbers and as an added bonus will spend zero time clogging up the runway!

It's the wake turbulence warnings behind you that everyone has to worry about.

Ever since I saw the video of that Cirrus involuntarily roll because of the wake turb behind the Blackhawk, I've been REALLY, SUPER EXTRA LEERY when rotary guys are in the pattern.

There is a LOT of helo traffic around here.

I think that ended up being attributed to a take off stall rather than wake turbulence. Having said that prudence is appropriate around Helicopters. Not as much due to the wake we create but more a factor of how awesome we are......

I learned long ago not to always put the jets in front of a turboprop. Inside of 20 miles all the King Airs, 1900s, PC12s, are outrunning the commercial jet traffic. Too bad a lot of other controllers think a jet will always be number 1.

I remember the first the first time I ran a C208 down EWR's final. Gave him bare min spacing behind the guy in front anticipating it to open up and tons of room behind him. Never did that again lol
