Pre-purchase Thoughts

I am about to plop down the money for a Lightspeed 20-3g headset, and a Lawrance 600c gps. I was wondering if current owners are happy with these products, or would recomend something else. I don't want the bose. I have tried, and liked the lightspeeds, and Garmin is too much money.

What about David Clarks?

Don't be cheap when it comes to headset purchases.

GET THE ANR

Get an ANR, protect your hearing, cause the next thing you know, you're 31, straining to hear people in a crowd, and thinking "Why the hell didn't I wear earplugs?!"

You mean David Clamps....? :rotfl:

If you got a big melon, they hurt like hell. Seriously....

As for the ANR, after going the cheap route and borrowing an ANR headset at one point. Get the ANR.....Much nicer.

I have a big melon as well and they really aren't that bad. You have DC Jim?

DCs really pinch that bad? I heart my DC H10-13.4s, but they're not the ANR version. Then again, I fall into the 'small melon' category.

Whatever gray headset my dad has that I used to wear pinched something terrible. I finally quit wearing them and went headset-less until Bill bought me my DCs. Again, another contributing factor to the hearing loss! Use an ANR, and wear earplugs on the ramp!

I am thinking about getting the 13.4, and doing the anr conversion on them, but then I won't have an input for my ipod. I like the ANR DC's, but man they are steep!!

I love my Lightspeed Twenty 3G's. I was having some issues with the ANR on them (after 4 years, mind you) and they replaced half the headset no questions asked. They'll probably be good for another 4 years and by then I should be flying some equipment where I won't need the ANR (read as; an MD-88). I can't say enough great things about Lightspeed and their headsets.

David Clark's really depend on your head.

I'm bias to the Bose, they are without a doubt the best of the best.

You really can't go wrong with a LightSpeed headset. I found out first hand how superb their customer service really is. I purchased a XFR XC, which is the best passive headset period coupled with ANR, back in 2002. 4.5 years later the audio stopped working on a quick turn. Even though I had never registered the headset and it's well out of warranty, I was told to simply mail the headsets to them and they would take care of it. No questions about the warranty and no mention of payment. About a week later I received them back. They replaced the audio box with an upgraded version (cell phone/mp3 interface), new cables, new mic muff, new side tracks, new ear foam pads, and a new headband foam pad. The thing is practically new! At no cost. Nice.

I have the older version of the Lightspeed 20gs. No complaints. Get rechargeable batteries though as they do eat through them pretty good. I had three sets of batteries. One in the headset, one in my flight case and one at home on the charger. Never had a problem that way.

Has anyone tried this conversion yet? I've been looking into it recently, and wonder if its worth the $$ and effort. Sounds like a great concept on the outside....

The Lowrance 600 is awesome. I love it. Best bang for the buck. I've been using it for a little over 8 months and it does everything I could ask of it.

I used the 30 3G's for almost two years and they were NOT worth the money. I will say that the customer service at LightSpeed is 2nd to none, though. Everytime they BROKE (ANR goes out and the headset doesnt work anymore-I was assured that an AT HOME REPAIR job would be good enough-the problem in the battery box had been identified and fixed) there I was sitting there S.O.L. needing to get my job done.
Buy the Bose. Its worth the money. Nice and light with comfortable ear seals. The best ANR in the world! I will not need to buy a headset for YEARS to come regardless of what plane I fly. And my ears dont sweat.:)
