Pre-9/11 wages

What were the pre- 9/11 wages at the various regionals? Anybody know?

I would just like to compare what it was to what it is now? Were they similar to what it is now? How about 1990-1995 regional wages?

I'm just trying to get a feel of how much things actually have changed as time went on. I realize the $ was worth a lot more in 1995 then it is now, and all that, but relatively/generally speaking, how was it?

Please make all posts adjusted for inflation please :sarcasm:

They were alot less than they were now, except for Comair and Air Wizzy when they had those nice contracts briefly before going to concessions. But overall the pay in the industry has been picking up steadily with more perks (paid hotel, salary during training). Back in the day most of the regionals did things Great Lakes style:eek:

They also flew Great Lakes style airplanes. Why would a Beech 1900 or a Metroliner pay as much as an F100?

Now that being said, we're flying CRJ-900's (which are the same size as an F-100) for Metroliner rates, and that's sickening.

Well, our current contract was signed in 1999.....so our wages pre-9/11 were sadly the same as they are now.

For the majors take the current pay scale and multiply X2. That is a rough figure that will get you close, although it doesn't even touch on the QOL hits.

For the regionals I think pay has been going up slowly bit by bit.

Damn, I thought this whole time that the pay at the regional level back in the day was much better then it is now, as well as QOL. Well I guess we are on the right track then. :rawk: slowly but surely.

The regional flying was MUCH better "back in the day"

It was called flying a Fokker-100 for American, a DC-9 for USAir, or a 737-100 for Continental. Notice the lack of extraneous names;)

To compare apples to apples (cool game by the way) you have to compare the "commuter" flying of the 90's to the "commuter" airlines of today. Colgan, Big Sky, CommutAir, Piedmont, Great Lakes and Air Midwest. As far as that is concerned it stayed about the same.

I wrote an article for our union newsletter at PCL that compared rates of the commuters from years ago to the rates today when corrected for inflation. I used ALPA's archives to find data for comparisons. The results?

Typical first year FO rate for <20-seat turboprop circa 1990 - $26.13/hr
Typical first year FO rate for 70-seat jet today - $21/hr

We make about $5/hr less today to fly a jet aircraft with over double the seating capacity. It gets really scary when you look at the mainline comparisons:

Typical top Capt rate for 747 in the mid-80s - $268/hr
Typical top Capt rate for 747 today - $180/hr

That's right, folks. We've actually lost almost $100/hr in the past couple of decades on mainline equipment. I won't even get into the pre-deregulation payrates, because that will just depress you as to how far we've fallen. Keep this in mind when you're deciding whether to vote pro-labor in November.

This is what happens when people on the MEC have too much time on layovers. :) It was a good article, though.
