It's an IFR thing. Not sure what the first A is, but here's the rest:
Marker Beacons (tested and on, if req)
Identify Navaid
Course set
Entry (vectors, hold, etc)
Altitudes (step downs, MDA, DH)
Time (if needed)
Missed Approach point and instructions
As far as using books in the Oral, take your FAR/AIM into the oral. If you get stumped, just make sure you know where to find the answer. I wouldn't make it a habit, but at least the DE knows you know where to look.
