Possible Mid-Air over Hudson.

Anything that happens in and around New York gets a lot of media coverage , i dont know if you remember about a week ago , a homeless man threatening to blow himself at LGA with a duff-bag full of batteries and wires , airport was shut down from 5 AM till 1 PM
and news reports were all over , saying he was Al qaida and all sorts of things ..
RIP to those who have perished in this terrible accident
it was a Piper saratoga with one of liberty tours choppers .
i am not trying to speculate , but when the Helicopters take off from the west side highway VIP helipad , they go backwards ( HWY and buildings straight ahead of them) gain some altitude then turn around
i dont know if that contributed to the collision or not , just a thought.

A witness told investigators he saw the airplane approach the helicopter from behind, and the plane's right wing made "contact with the helicopter," Hersman said.

The witness, another Liberty pilot who was refueling at a nearby heliport, said he tried to warn the helicopter pilot, but got no response.

If this were indeed true, the view of the helo may have been blocked the low wing. Who knows...

RIP to the people involved.

And now to the news. They are still talking about it this morning... and "why is there little to no regulation on small airplanes that can fly over your house at any time?" I wonder how we can know how ridiculous the news agencies are on this subject, and still put trust in them on others?

On a side note, there was a two car crash this morning near Fresno, CA that killed more people than this airplane accident, and it only recieved about 30 seconds of news time (and that was local news).

Big deal. Everyone and their uncle's news site would have pictures posted if they had them. Fox is no different from any other news source in that respect. Why do you care if they put up the picture? Why would that degrade the victims?

EDIT: Putting up the pictures is a good thing in my mind. It really hits it home with people like you and me who expect to fly and makes us all that more emotionally pushed to stay extra vigilant on the job. It also makes people more empathic towards those effected. Seeing it induces more emotion than hearing.

C H I L L O U T. I was simply remarking how a channel (I could care less if it's Fox or not) posted the pics and how it shows a remarkable view of the aftermath of this horrible event.

Honestly though. Can someone drown Mayor Daley?

He is one of the few people that if I met him, I would refuse to shake his hand. Purely a symbolic gesture, of course, but I will not shake the hand of someone who orders such a cowardly act of destroying an airport in the middle of the night.

I generally don't speak bad of people, but he's an ass.

:yeahthat:

Just a ticked off kinda glare is all he would get from me.

And from what I understand, he's the kind of guy who would get some arrogant satisfaction from meeting people who hate him so much that they refuse to shake his hand. I wouldn't give him even that much satisfaction. Not meeting him at all is where I'd draw the line.

Question for those more knowledgeable: would ADS-B have helped to prevent this type of accident?

I realize fully that nothing is fool proof since fools are so clever. That said, assuming everyone is equipped, does ADS-B provide enough data to avoid a mid-air? I seem to recall that it helped reduce mid-airs in Alaska by a lot.
I don't know enough about ADS-B to comment on it. But my first reaction was that I couldn't believe those helicopters operate in such dangerous airspace without having some sort of TCAD on board. Then I remembered what it was like when I've flown the corridor myself and I suspect that if you put any kind of traffic warning system in those helicopters, the pilots would shut it off after the first hour and it would never get turned on again. There is just too much traffic in the corridor. Even on the least sensitive setting, any kind of traffic box would be going off constantly and would therefore be nearly useless and would simply get turned off most of the time.

Hahha..

Just watching the NY Fox 5 news report. Asian anchorwoman reads off of a graphic..The graphic showed the airplane and the type PIPER PA34-200

What does she say? "The aircraft involved was a Piper Pennsylvania 34-200..."

Nice job reading the news lady.
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Just saw on Fox news that they are asking the question "is the area too busy for GA traffic"

Here we go.

As I mentioned yesterday I was flying the corridor yesterday at the time of the accident. ( I was passing the statue of liberty) I can't shake the bad feeling out of my gut on this one. This morning I was watching MSNBC and they had a former tour helo pilot on who was saying that fixed wing aircraft are the danger on the HRC and that the tour helo pilots all know the unstated protocals for safe flying on the HRC.

I am not trying to start a war or direct blame on this one but traveling south past the heli-pad on W40 I have always thought about low-wing aircraft not being able to see a climbing helo and the climbing helo not being able to the see the traffic coming in the there rear blind spot.

The helo pilot today mentioned that the tour pilots fl below 1000'ft however, I seen them at the same altitude many times.

Anyway, enough of my rant.

I flew up the Hudson a couple of dozen times. I NEVER did the VFR Corridor. It was quite easy to get clearance into the Class B Airspace with EWR Tower, LGA Tower, NY Approach. Much less of a pucker factor and safer.

BS, the media should not be about making people emotional. They should be about reporting facts about an incident correctly and respectfully

Amen. I wish they were more like Joe Friday..."just the facts, mam" and let the chips fall where they may. The problem is that they have to try and play up everything for ratings.

I won't come down on Fox for showing the photos of the accident - like others, I think any station would.

That being said, since when was it ok to show pictures of bodies? Right now on Fox news' website you can see a slideshow that includes the arm and head of a victim (albeit from somewhat of a distance). That seems pretty out of line.

In this day and age, midairs ought to be a thing of the past. Simple anticollision systems can be bought for as little as $500, and I don't understand why devices like these aren't standard equipment on every aircraft equipped with an electrical system, especially if you're operating in airspace like that.

RIP

Money.

I still remember when requiring Mode C transponders within 30 miles of a primary airport of a TCA was outrageously unacceptable.

Yeah, I said TCA! :)

TCA.....hell yeah!

Surprising how many people now don't know what that is/was.

I walked through the living room earlier while my dad was watching the news (idk what channel) and some female reporter, anchor, whatever she was, was complaining about how everything having to do with small private planes are unsafe and how that area should be controlled and that money should not be the reason that nothing is being done to improve that area and how if you own a private plane money shouldn't be something that you have to worry about so you should be able to go out and buy whatever it was that she was talking about in order to prevent things like this from happening. I stopped listening past a certain point because she obviously had no idea what she was talking about and was merely just stating her personal opinion on the subject and a lot of her "facts" were way off. Stupid people like her shouldn't be allowed on a news station. I know plenty of people who own planes and don't have a ton of extra money, especially right now the way the economy is. I wanted to reach into the tv and punch her in the face.

I was watching MSNBC, I think, and the aviation expert was very good! I was surprised.
