Portable GPS interferes with airliner systems?

If a passenger is using a handheld GPS during cruise, is it going to interfere with the plane's systems? A pilot was telling this passenger it would, but I have never heard that before.

I would be real curious to find out how how mine, with the raging power of two AA's, could do anything at all to an airplane's systems. Compared to a laptop, I cannot imagine much.

It can bring down the plane. Cause it to come crashing down, out of control, totally unexpected.

And if you persist in using onboard electronics as a pax, you will be labled a terrorist, arrested, sent VFR-direct to Guantanamo Bay, and locked up by the military with no legal representation for any number of years.........

lol

I think it depends on the airline whether you're able to use a GPS unit or not.

Aviation GPS, of course it's not going to cause a problem! It's made to work an an airplane and is going to be shielded from causing too much trouble. Regular GPS that's not designed for aviation use? Couldn't tell you.

They are the same units... just different programs...

I don't think that's the issue... A GPS, a small handheld video game, a cell phone in airlplane mode, whatever. 1 battery or 5... they are all "portable electronic devices"... and well... we've heard the schpiel before about them from the FA's.

Not only that it makes the rubber jungle, i.e. oxygen masks, fall from the ceiling and makes the coffee maker spew black water...

Question...do I get to smoke Cuban cigars there?

A surprising answer...

Surprised me silly, but according to the FOM for my company:

Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers utilizing external wires (i.e. suction cups) may be:

(a) Operated during an extended taxi delay and

(b) May be operated dwhen boarding door is open/during taxi-in

and

Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers that do not utilize external wires (i.e. suction cups):

(a) May be operated at all times.

(FOM 7 - 1.6)

But if the flight attendant shreiks and screams, "Mash the owf button!" just comply.
