Portable Devices Approved

So the FAA has publicly stated the PED policy is changing. It will take time for individual airlines to get this approved. I can see a passenger refusing to turn it off, citing a news article.

The scene is set for some interesting flight attendant/passenger interactions!

I like the part where he said on 1% of flights certain instrument systems may not be able to handle the interference. How is that an acceptable number?

Or that passengers will be asked to turn off PEDs when there's low vis.

Yeah, that's going to go over well.

"But my iPhone says.....!"

Meh, was it so hard to turn off your ipod for 5 minutes and maybe read a magazine, book, or just sit there with your thoughts.

I have a library in my house at home, too, but I wouldn't want to carry one of those books on the road with me. The iPad makes travel a lot more convenient, and it's about damned time that the FAA recognized what everyone else has known for a very long time about the safety of PEDs.

Ive never really been able to read on an airplane. Its earphones, music and sleep 95% of the time.

5 minutes? More like 30 once you taxi, take off, and get through 10k. Then on the way down, I've seen FAs "prepare the cabin" at cruise.

It'll be nice to be able to read my Kindle whenever I want. And frankly, on a 17 day trip, I really need a Kindle. Otherwise, I'll be carrying around 2-3 normal books.

And they are approving iPads / Surface for the cockpit?

Low vis is NOT when the cockpit IPad should be shut down.

Any source to which instruments were effected?

Yeah, duh! The FAA says so. They're like the internet. And you can't put anything on the internet that isn't true.

I asked as I knew old phones and nav devices didn't like the phone in hunt mode.

Got a link to the FAA document? I'm still on airport appreciation.
