Amazing. Glad they came out with only minor injuries.

Does anyone know what "auto" means in a helicopter? The pilot of the helicopter was referring to it before they hit the ground.

Also, can anything be done to keep a helicopter from falling like a brick in the event of an engine failure?

"Auto" as in "Autorotate."

They use this maneuver to "glide" the helicopter on the rotors until they can get to an altitude to flare. They still smack down pretty hard.

You'd be amazed at how much stress the skids are able to endure -- they're designed to collapse and absorb all the impact (to a certain extent).
