POH/AFM

Studying for my initial CFI. Been out of aviation for nearly 20 years so the "disuse" concept is rearing its ugly head.

So the question I am trying to answer is this. What is the difference between the Approved FAA AFM, and the POH?

Thanks all in advance

...mmm, you say tomayto, I say tomahto, .. I don't really think there is any real difference. Maybe, ..a POH is the term little airplanes, or maybe the older private planes used. Some didn't even have one. I think the AFM term was more applicable to bigger, or military, airplanes and just sifted down to light planes in recent years. I think. Just guessing.

Are you speaking in terms of an "Information Manual" and a "POH".

The Difference is that one is airplane specific and has serial number. = expensive.
The information manual is just a cheap generic book that is not airplane specific and is not required to be in the airplane while flying. = cheap (small planes)

This may not be what you are looking for but it is what I am guessing since you are saying you are getting back into little airplane GA flying.

:yeahthat:

FAA AFM - required to be in the plane (operating limitations, w&b) and is too brittle to even open up

POH - is basically to study with or flip open for easy reference if you make sure all the information matches

The POH has historically followed no particular format; each manufacturer developed its own. Only the limitations section was FAA approved. Later, GAMA (General Aviation Manufacturer's Assoc) developed a common industry format that most manufacturer's used, starting sometime in the mid 70's.

The FAA later created the specifications for the AFM and started requiring it for new airplanes. A POH may, or may not, be an AFM, but often contains it, if one exists.
