Why…..? It’s so tiring. 🤙

....The plane had been accompanied by two Greek F-16 fighter jets after losing communications with the Athens control tower....

Weird. Preliminary reports cite the plane flying into terrain, O2 masks depolyed in the cabin, co-pilot unresponsive in the cockpit, and the Captain in the cabin. Also reports of a text message from a pax reporting everyone freezing. Not too old a plane either, 300 model 73.

All the signs of a repeat of the Payne Stewart crash. Good reminder to really test those masks to insure the supply is open to a full bottle.

The fact that a passenger was messaging about the pilots being unconscious and cabin freezing says a lot. The pax had their 20 minutes of O2, the crew maybe none.

Well the question is if the pilots had their masks on at all...

So the passengers knew that the pilots were unconscious and they just calmly stayed in their seats because the fasten seat belt sign was on?

Hypothetical situation for you

You're at FL350. You're in seat 18C. Pilots pass out, masks drop. You have ~5 seconds of useful consciousness without the mask. How do you get to the cockpit? Do you stand up and go aisle by aisle and get every mask? If so, what do you do when you get to row 1, when you don't know if the masks are working.

I pull my cellphone out of my pocket, turn it on, wait for it to "boot up" and send a text message to my cousin explaining the situation.

At that point the plane is too low to recover anyway. Cell phones wouldn't even get service above 4000-5000 ft. (sometimes higher but not likely)

Taking a chance on the masks not working gives me better odds than sitting in my seat with Oxygen until impact!

True, but unless you've ever been in a cockpit before, do you think you'd be able to find the mask in 5-7 seconds?

And if the door is locked?

I'm just talking about what was reported.

"A man whose cousin was a passenger on the plane told Greece's Alpha television he received a cell-phone text message minutes before the crash. "He told me the pilots were unconscious. ... He said: "Farewell, cousin, here we're frozen," Sotiris Voutas said"

Sorry I don't know how to make it "easy on the eyes"

Time of useful consciousness at FL350 is anywhere from 1 to 2 minutes at FL350. The 5-7 seconds you're talking about is for FL500.

And for whomever talked about the cell phone coverage, I get great coverage at 8-10,000 feet. I guess it all depends on where you're at.

Tough to imagine thinking to text message someone at that point. I hardly have the presence of mind to do it while sitting still in a perfectly good hotel room.

Would the pax messaging support a long period after decompression or a very short one between decompression and impact?

Again, I'd rather die looking for the mask than die in my seat breathing all the way to the ground!!

Besides, I can hold my breath for at least 45 seconds!!

I'm just curious as to how they were able to ascertain if the pilots were passed out or not?

The passengers probably saw a deadheading crewmember passed out.

And at that point a healthy person no longer needs the O2 masks.

From a Yahoo! News article:
[ QUOTE ]
When they intercepted the plane, the jet pilots could see the co-pilot slumped over his seat. The captain was not in the cockpit, and oxygen masks were dangling inside the cabin, government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos said.

He said the jet pilots also saw two people apparently trying to take control of the plane, but it was unclear if they were members of the crew or passengers.

[/ QUOTE ]

hmmm where was the captain? i can't imagine the captain going outside the cockpit unless there's an extra O2 tank somewhere that's not connected to the main O2 tank on the plane?
