no initial assignment, we asked for 34R about 80 miles out and then the thing i posted was when we checked in with approach about 30 miles from the airport. weather was severe clear vfr, we got vectored west of the airport for about an 8 mile base. I mean all things considering it wasn't bad and everything worked out just fine but we could have easily shaved ~5 min, I just thought that when you are an emergency everyone gets out of your way.
 
Rather than use the speedbrakes in the Airbus, just stick your hand out the window. You'll get more drag that way.

A far cry from a 727 or DC-9, which had an integral speedbrake.
