$1000 a month in the bay area will get you a room in someone's basement, or a quaint little house in East Oakland (heavy on the quaint part, FYI). I would recommend a roommate, or a studio apartment.

Depending on how far out of the city you want to go (and in which direction) you can probably find an ok place if you get a room mate for $1000.
