Piper Aerostar crash, or, Don't do stupid things in airplanes.

Ive seen it in the civilian world and I've seen it in military aviation.
I've seen what you describe in both military and civilian aviation. Re-read my post, I'm almost in total agreement with you.....except, there are some things that some of us would never do. I would never PLAN on violating a FAR. So, if the "guy" you like to reference is a guy that PLANNED on violating a FAR, I can say I won't be THAT guy. We all make decision-making errors and we all make stick-and-rudder errors. There is no shortage of ways in which I might die with my hands on the yoke or stick. I'm describing aspects of character. I'm not going to beat up my girlfriend and I'm not going to PLAN on violating a FAR.

Sidebar: When I hear the P-51 that flies out of Louisville approach, I drop everything. Must be a thrill. I've seen Snodgrass take one through its paces a few times.

I've not made a penny with my license since 1979 when I did Rent-a-Pilot work but I still place a lot of value on that little card in my wallet.
  • You can get away with one low pass, everyone is surprised.
  • The second pass is pretty risky because they're watching for you.
  • But on the third pass you can bet everyone with a smart phone is shooting video and you are going to get busted. Guaranteed suspension!
Here's a guy who's chosen profession is flying airplanes yet he placed so little value on his pilots license.

I just don't get it... Maybe I'm smarter than most? I don't know, I never wear a watch.

The more I read this report the more pissed off I get. I sometimes wish some of the pilots I knew who died over stupid crap that I could hold them against the hangar and kick the ish out of them. I'm sure their families would appreciate it too. 5-20ft off of rooftops, come on man...

It's my understanding the Aerostar was originally designed for turbine engines. It is over designed in that respect using props, and is an extremely well built plane.

A couple years ago a design firm put two turbines on an Aerostar, 380 kts:
