Pipeline Flying

Hey Guys:

Just wondering if there are any people on here that currently make a full-time living flying aerial patrols over pipelines. Our flight school has the contract for a pipeline, but I only get to do low-level about 2 times/month. I really enjoy the flying and would like to find a full-time pipeline patrol position. I am DOT trained, and would appreciate any help or information.

I used to fly it full time and yes there are plenty of people who fly pipeline fulltime. I was on track to make 50k during the time I flew pipeline... I am pretty sure all pipeline pilots have to be DOT trained but there are some really big differences between companies out there. Where are you currently located? I know of one spot in SW TX that may opening up rather quickly... how much time do you have as well? That will help sort out who will and who won't hire you as different companies have different hiring requirements.
Best of luck!

Hey Avalon:

Sorry for the late reply; I forgot that I had made this thread. You are correct that there must be someone that has their current DOT OQ, but there can be a separate observer with that qualification. Our company operates with a pilot (me) and the observer; however I am also current on my DOT OQ. Currently I have 550 TT, CFI/II/MEI, and about 40 hours of low level pipeline flying. Also, I am currently in the Wisconsin, but possibly willing to relocate if it's a full-time pipeline gig.
