Pinnacle: Hiring @ 300 hr TT for UND students

You didn't get what mach.14 said earlier. Your pay will raise considerably when you gain operational experience. All pay structures in the commercial aviation world (121 and 135) are based off of operational experience (in the form of seniority). Simply put, the longer you have been flying (for that company), the more experience you have, and the more you will be paid. Wake you up when it changes?? You might as well find another career right now. If you don't want to live a couple years with income less than 35K in order to gain the opportunity to earn over 100K for more than half your career, 121 flying is not for you.

The main point here is that lowered qualifications to get hired is not good for the industry.

My personal situation is different then the average student. I have been preparing for crap wages for over a year. There are other options besides the Regionals to get to the majors. I am willing to put up with crap wages if its the best opportunity for myself.

It is not so simple as in putting up for crap wages for a couple years and hitting the majors and being set for life. Who is to say that the Regional who hires you at 200 hours will be here tomorrow? What if something happens to the company before you get considerable time in the left seat? You would be right back in step one.

All I am saying is that you need to consider all your options. From what I have learned on this website is that there is a lot more to becoming an airline pilot then just flying.

Of course everyone needs to consider their best options. Going to a regional is not best for each individual. I'm saying that it is the fastest way of getting to a major.

You want to protect yourself from going to an airline that may go tits up in 6 months? Do some research. There isn't much else you can do. On the same note, its the same for any airline or corporate entity. You can go to a corporate flight department, but they might sell the aircraft out of the blue. It happens all the time.

Just waiting for them to start recruiting the 14 year old MS Flight Sim pilots from airliners.net You know the "Experts"

my favorite part is how theyre showing the software running at about 10 frames per second.

at least theyre honest!

I've been tweaking the hell out of my laptop and can get it to run at 17fps at just above the medium settings at 800X400X16(whatever the 800 one is, I don't know off hand). It's alright I guess. Still kinda sucks after I play it on the system I have back home which can run it at everything full blast, the highest resolution, and have AIM, MSNM, a video playing, an defragging the hard drive, all while running at 30+ fps. :)

pfft.

ive got my standard issue aviation laptop running it 1028x768 with mostly medium-high settings at a solid 25-45fps.

step 1) update your video card drivers on the laptop (google around for how to do it since nvidia/dell cripplewares their drivers to be non-installable on our laptops.

step 2) get one of the many readily available modified .cfg files for fsx and start from there as a good starting point for tweaking...

updating the vid card drivers made a WORLD of difference for me.

Yeah, I've just been messing around with what I've got. I haven't gotten around to messing with it further. I used to mess with the .cfg files in MS98. But I don't remember what I used to do. I think it was just tweaking how the airplanes flew though(like making a 747 fly like an extra 300S. haha, I'm a dork :D). What do you do in there?

google for fsx tweaking.... thats the best advice i can give. theres a LOT that can be done to really speed up the sim without sacrificing much/any visual quality

I honestly think that hiring between 400-500 hours is acceptable if you've gone outside of the UND bubble for a bit to get some more experience. Now, I do believe that there is a lot of growing (personally and professionally) to do outside of college and building time flight instructing or doing some part 91 flying for a company is a must. Hiring at low times is not a new thing though; the legacy carriers were hiring at these times back in the 60's. Not only that, but there are a lot of european and asian carriers that hire at these times into heavy equipment. It is whatever the market demands. Right now we are in a position to achieve better pay and better qol. In fact to prove this, CHQ is giving a $2,500 signing bonus if you are already qualified on the CRJ or ERJ...companies will start to add perks to recruit you. It has never been a secret that regional pay is bad..it is a necessary evil to get to where you want to be. If you get to the regionals faster, it only means more time spent at a major..and honestly there is so much movement at the regional I'm at now, the upgrade time is only expected to be 1-2 years, so making it over to a major won't take as long as it has been. The industry is cyclical so take advantage of the opportunities that are at your door now because who knows how much longer this will last or when we'll see it again. The CRJ course at UND is probably one of the most valuable courses that I took while I was there...it was a GREAT preview to an airline's ground school and sim program. Take care everyone.

QOL of life at Pinnacle isnt that bad. I started class in May of last year and already have 15 days off a month. Upgrade was recently awarded to a few that were still in new hire class since most FO's dont meet the flight time requirements to upgrade (currently 2500 hours, soon to be 2000 hours). As of now, once you have the flight time, you can be in upgrade class the next month.
