Pilots to strike if NWA imposes cuts

If they don't they're going to get a very rude awakening.

It's a big shell game. Check out the situation with Comair. For years they'd say "Regional jets are profitable! Comair is making money hands over fist!" Now they want concessions from Comair so magically, "The Comair division was not profitable in 2005 and they must agree to concessions."

Game set match!

:)

1. Look at the cash flow
2. Look at retention bonuses
3. Look at attempts to rectify revenue problems (the revenue needs to come from customers not the employees)
4. Look at JetBlue losing cash. Instead of saying "Concession time!" they addressed the revenue problem by discussing raising fares, off the bat.

- The problem with the airline business isn't labor. Labor is a problem for Wall Street, G.E. and the ATA because all three institutions which control the capital in the airline business are notoriously anti-labor. Wall Street can save a sinking boat, take accolades and issue press releases for doing such, then scan the crowd for union pins and throw those individuals back into the shark-infested waters.

The powers that be in this nation have a vendetta to absolutely kill organized labor because we're the last bastion of the middle class fighting a global labor market. They'd love to fly a Chinese-built Boeing from LAX to SFO leased from a Polish leasing company flown with contract pilots from Chechnya.

Don't believe me? Just watch. They want to turn the airline business into a industry run like the cruise ship business. A bevvy of low-paid people that get involved to do a little bit of travel before returning to the 'real world', with a 'real job'. Sure it's "Norweigian Cruise Lines", but it's really an American company with a foreign-built boat registered overseas to subvert US martime law, staffed with $1/day Indonesians and crewed by foreign nationals to get around US labor law.

OTOH - Thanks for the reminder to go to "The Lavatory" and check out the latest drama in Jetcareer's Chess Blaster Nine Hundred Million Thousand

(just a view from outside looking in..my .02)

I'm suprised we haven't even gotten to the point where NWA/Delta are talking about pensions. Wasn't it United that did that dumped the pensions to a 401k style program or something like that during bankruptcy?

I think both Delta and Northwest are trying to do exactly what United did in court but trying to position themselves better coming out of BK...while pushing the labor as far as they can.

The companies don't want to discuss pensions right now, because they are driving hard for wage and workrule concessions. Then after the employees have "given up the farm" to save their pensions, the company will declare the pensions insolvent and pass them off to the PBGC. Thus the employees lose twice. And the managers run to the bank declaring "Look at how much money we saved, give us bonuses!!"

you say that like Aldi's is a bad thing. ;)

One day while we were still in Chicago, after getting back from Aldi's as I unloaded my groceries I grabbed a calculator and did some math. I added up what the stuff I bought would have cost at the local Dominick's (one of the two big grocery store chains in Chicago), and I compared that to my Aldi's reciept.

I kid you not, the Aldi reciept was half of what the Dominick's prices would have been. Half. Having seen that, and knowing know how much I save, even if I was a cajillionaire, I don't think I could go back to buying everything at regular name-brand grocery stores anymore. There are still somethings that Aldi simply doesn't carry, so I havn't abandoned Marsh & Kroger (the Indy stores) completely.

I get a bit irritated when it comes to the paycuts, and Aldi got used in my example. Not to imply that saving 1/2 on one's grocery bill is a bad thing by any means! I'm actualy incredibly cheap. (Take that whatever way you want.) Living on new-hire Eagle F/A wages ($10.75/hour) taught me a LOT about penny-pinching.

Hey Matt, while I've got your ear, check your email address on your registration as I get about 5 to 10 bounced emails from your account from messages you've subscribed to.

The first Aldi's I ever heard of was in St. Joseph, MO (if I recall correctly). Living in Plattsmouth, NE, at the time, it wasn't on our regular weekend circuit. However, every time we travelled to Memphis or Bossier City, LA to visit parents, we'd make a point of stopping in for several cases of canned goods. Similarly, whenever they visited, they'd stop in to load up on green beans, corn, etc. They brought us cases on the way up, and stopped in again for themselves on the way back home. (I actually prefer their green beans to any store brand, anyway.)

Now that we're living in Memphis, and Aldi's finally made it here, we're delighted with the convenience and price. Yeah, I thought it was a bit cheesy that we had to put a quarter in the slot to borrow a grocery basket, but then again I think it's a hassle to dodge the hundreds of carts strategically placed around the parking lot at Wal*Mart blocking all the good parking spaces. :) You're right, they don't have everything you might want, but the stuff they have is a fantastic bargain.

If they don't have it there, Sam's or Costco is the next stop, and then we start working our way up the chain with Wal*Mart and Kroger.

I've got several good reasons to save ½ off a grocery bill - - I'd never say it's a bad thing. :)

I think of myself as easy, but not cheap. No, wait, that's something else.

How about frugal? Nobody can fault us for being frugal, can they? :)

I think we should all learn the penny-pinching skills. Even if I were making a billion dollars a day today, there's no guarantee I'll be making it tomorrow.
