Pilots have hurt themselves..

By a pilot taking the $18 per hour as a F/O it shows we have no self-esteem as a profession. I can not believe that we dont stand up and let them know we are worth more.

We spend years of our lives training, tens of thousands of dollars, and risk our lives every time we get into the cockpit. This is a joke. We are all better than this. Why is it that the transportation index (NYSE) is at an all-time high while our earnings are at an all-time low.

Pilots use to be in the same class as docs, lawyers, ect. What are we today? We pay our dues as for years and still make it nowhere. Isnt it time to stand together and let them know what we are worth.

Any thoughts?

Try flight instructing, it pays better than most regional gigs.

Oh that's right! You don't want to get your instructor ratings, you just want to move on to the heavy iron, but with good pay right?

If you are really trying to make the point that the airline industry is just swimming in profits and a huge ROI for stockholders, I would have to say you are off base.

MeritFlyer,

You can hold out, but as long as the airlines fill ground schools, your idea is just that, an idea. I agree, but I had to move on from instruction, so I took the job. There is over capacity in the industry right now, in both airplanes and pilots. I think we need to work on that and then we can start the pay problems.

Instructor Ratings..

I never said I didnt want my instructor ratings. I simply asked a question and instead of an intellegent answer I was beaten. I most likely will get my ratings and instruct on the side from my real job.

However, something needs to be done about the pay. Does the ALPA really help pilots get where they need to be?

I am not trying to make a point at all. Take a look for yourself at the transportation index. It doesnt lie. Call a broker or do the research yourself. The TI is at an all time high adjusted for inflation regardless of the major carriers bankruptcy and financial woes. If you are going to argue with the market, you have not done the research. It is a very common misconception amongst pilots. You dont need to justify the $20K salaries for the airlines.

My thought is that to take a job paying $18 per hour and then verbally complain that you are being paid $18 is contradictory and ineffective. I am not saying it is wrong to do so, I am just saying that actions speak louder than words. The only way to effect change is to not accept the job in the first place.

What??

If you cant beat 'em, join 'em. I respectfully have to disagree. Taking the $18 per hour is the problem. By taking that the airline execs realize that pilots work for dirt and will continue to pay dirt.

I'm sorry meritflyer, I don't quite understand. Who/what are you disagreeing with?

I am disagreeing with the idea of the best way to change the industry is to accept the job at $18 per hour. Do you realize that you are eligible for welfare if you are making such earnings and have atleast one child?

I don’t agree with low wages, but keep in mind everyone has to pay their dues before they are B744 Captains or Brain Surgeons. Doctors go through residency for YEARS, pilots go through the regionals. Also- keep in mind that the commuters never paid six figures to FO's either.... and current fare wars supported by the American consumer wont allow it under current business models.

I got into this profession for the thrill of flying, not the thrill of the paycheck.

Persevere...

I love hearing that to justify the low wages. That residency doesn't last umpteen years. Pilots get shafted across the board, period. I'm sorry but the chances of a kid in poverty has a better chance to become a doctor than be a pilot. The career of piloting gets the short end big-time, just to train there isn't any federal backing, except if you get loans, etc. for studying something else.
